22. Positive and Negative - Originally Aired 5/3/10
Brian’s wife Samantha and Spencer’s wife Tara are sitting at a table in Samantha and Brian’s kitchen sharing a cup of coffee together. The two appear to be deep in conversation with one another, that is until a sweaty Brian and his son Seamus enter from outside. They have been throwing the baseball around on a lazy Saturday morning. The two women suddenly clam up when Brian and Seamus enter, while Tara becomes uncomfortable and tells Samantha that they will “talk later”. Brian doesn’t immediately think anything of Tara’s behavior; he kisses Samantha and heads upstairs to shower. Brian emerges from the bathroom, clad in a towel and drying his hair, while Samantha is sitting on the bed talking on her cell phone. As soon as he enters, Samantha cuts off the conversation and hangs up. Samantha tries to cover up, telling Brian that the phone call was a wrong number and quickly leaves the room. Making sure she is gone, Brian looks at his wife’s cell phone and notices that the last call came from Tara Connor. A couple days later, Brian catches Samantha chatting on-line and when he leans over to see who she is talking to, Samantha quickly closes the laptop and attempts to change the subject. At Spencer’s bowling alley, Brian shares his concerns with the other guys - Nate, Spencer, and Duncan. Spencer has no idea why Samantha would be talking to his wife, while Nate (naturally) wonders if Samantha and Tara “have a thing going”. Nate tells Brian that if that is indeed what is going on, he’s a lucky man and should take advantage of the situation. He laments “the closest I ever get to a three-way is when the dog comes into the bedroom and watches us”; realizing that Brian could live out every guy’s fantasy - a three-way with two women - Nate tells Brian “I hate you!”. Brian is shaving in the bathroom and goes to change the razor. He opens up the medicine cabinet and notices an open pregnancy test box. Curious, and making sure Samantha is nowhere nearby, he takes the test out of the box. It’s been used, and it’s positive! Brian quickly confides in his friends that Samantha may be pregnant, a prospect that scares him. Realizing that the dream of a three-way is dead, Nate sulks, “I knew it was too good to be true”. Brian, Nate, and Spencer are watching an NBA game in Brian’s living room when they run out of chips. Nate passes the bowl to Brian, insinuating that he should go re-fill it. Brian goes into the kitchen for more chips when he notices thru the window that Samantha and Tara are talking on the patio. He opens the sliding glass door and confronts the two women. Brian admits to seeing the pregnancy test and assures Samantha that she can tell him anything. Samantha and Tara eyeball each other nervously and Samantha reassures Brian that “it isn’t what you think”. By now, Spencer and Nate have gotten restless for more chips and Spencer goes to investigate the hold-up. He notices Brian, Samantha, and Tara on the patio and listens in. Samantha confesses that she bought the pregnancy test, but she didn’t use it. Tara is the one who used the test and it is Tara who is pregnant. Shocked at the news, Spencer faints. 23. A Couple of DIKs - Originally Aired 5/10/10 Duncan is sitting on his back porch with an old friend from college, Mario (special guest star Mario Cantone) when Nate and Brian drop by to ask him if he wants to join them and go over to Spencer’s bowling alley. Apparently, Spencer isn’t taking the news about his impending fatherhood all that well. Nate hesitates to ask when he notices Mario, suggesting that “we leave Duncan and his boyfriend alone”. Duncan introduces Mario to Nate and Brian, mentioning that he and Mario were friends in college - even belonging to the same fraternity, the Delta Iota Kappa’s (or DIK) - and he stopped over for a visit while he was in town for a business meeting. The two had spent the entire afternoon going down memory lane, revisiting all their raucous behavior in college, like panty raiding the sorority down the street and how much of a ‘horn dog’ and a ‘ladies man’ Duncan was in school; information that just floors Nate, especially the ‘ladies man’ part. Mario suggests that the guys through Spencer a guy’s night out, because once he becomes a father, those nights will be fewer and farther between. “Kind of like a bachelor…only not” quips Mario, who learns that Duncan never had a bachelor party himself. Mario is surprised to hear that his best bud from college never got to have one last memorable party before he headed down the aisle; he sets out to change that, much to Duncan’s chagrin. Get a few beers in Duncan and he loosens up…quick. The guys have found their way to the local strip club, “Bottoms Up” and the two self-declared college ‘ladies men’ Duncan and Mario are busy being male chauvinist pigs towards the female dancers, while (by comparison) Nate, Brian, and Spencer are more reserved. In fact, Spencer is ready to leave almost as soon as he arrives. After just several minutes, Spencer leaves while Nate and Brian follow him to investigate why he isn’t having a good time. Spencer confides in his friends that he appreciates the thought, but seeing naked women isn’t going to make him be a good father and the thought of screwing up another person’s life - that of his child - terrifies him. Screwing up his own life is fine, he can’t blame anybody for that, but doing that to a child is entirely different. He tells Brian and Nate that he doesn’t know how they do it; Nate admits that he doesn’t do a whole lot (that’s why he has a live-in nanny despite being a ‘house-husband’). Spencer sees a momentary solution to his problem when he asks how much a live-in nanny costs. Back inside the club, Brian comes back in and tells Duncan that they are leaving with Spencer. Duncan seems fine with that and continues to stay behind with Mario. The next morning, Duncan is asleep next to another person who is hidden by pillows and the bed cover. A cell phone rings and the other person answers it, while Duncan continues to sleep. A woman emerges from underneath the covering of bed sheets and pillows and hands the phone to Duncan, telling him “it’s your wife”. After a few seconds, Duncan realizes what has happened…“oh my God!” To Be Continued… 24. The Morning After [season finale] - Originally Aired 5/17/10 Brian is sleeping when he is awaked by his cell phone ringing. His hand fumbles around the night stand and he sleepily answers the phone before sitting up straight in bed and asks “you’re were?” The next thing he knows, Brian is walking into a hotel room with Nate and Spencer to join Duncan and the stripper he slept with the night before. The guys awkwardly introduce themselves to the oblivious stripper, Candi, and ask Duncan what happened last night. The only thing Duncan remembers is going to the strip club with the guys and Mario, but that is all. Just then, the guys are surprised to hear noises coming from the bathroom. They elect - via rock, paper, scissors - Spencer to investigate, who finds Mario (guest star Mario Cantone) asleep in the bathtub. Via flashback, Mario recounts the previous night, with the two of them having a great time at the strip club after Nate, Spencer, and Brian leave. They each take a stripper back to their respective hotel rooms, but Mario’s “date” doesn’t appreciate his chauvinistic ways and walks out on him; he then walks - or more appropriately, stumbles - into Duncan’s hotel room and passes out in the bathtub. The real test is yet to come, as Duncan realizes that he will have to tell his wife Jane about the drunken fling. Nate doesn’t think he should, but both Brian and Spencer argue that honesty is the best policy. Spencer volunteers to be Jane and has Duncan rehearse his apology. Unfortunately, Spencer gets caught up in his role and unleashes on Duncan, accusing him of “sleeping with whores while I’m slaving away cooking your supper on a hot stove.” With Brian and Spencer’s encouragement, Duncan decides to tell his wife the truth. Brian and Samantha are sitting on their living room sofa watching a home renovation television series (one that is boring Brian to death) when their doorbell rings. Eager to get away from the TV set, Brian leaps to answer to door. Duncan, with suitcases in hand, is standing in the doorway. “How did the talk go?” asks Brian. “I’m standing in your doorway with suitcases in my hand, how do you think it went? She kicked me out!” is Duncan’s reply. Duncan happens to see the show on television and tells Samantha how he loves the show and the two begin to yammer on about their mutual love for the show; while Brian is left holding the door, staring at Duncan and Samantha in disbelief. |
