Episode 9 ~ Daffodils & Second Chances

Michael and Ashley are at Michael’s place working on their project. There is a lot of tension in the room and Michael goes to get a glass of water and asks Ashley if she wants anything. She replies with a “No thank you” and continues working on the project. Michael finally breaks the silence with “So are we going to talk about this?” Ashley replies harshly “Talk about what Michael?” Michael “Look, I saw you with that guy the other night. I was coming over to talk to you about everything and I saw you hop into a fancy sports car and just drive away with some ridiculously good looking dude, and that’s fine, I just figured you would tell me about something like that.” Ashley looks at Michael with an angered expression on her face “So wait a sec, are you spying on me now? And since when do I need to report directly to you everything that is going on in my life?” Michael angrily replies “Good point, you never have in the past, why would you start now? I guess it’s the same old Ashley, everything is a mystery with you. I would have thought that maybe you would have grown up by now.” Ashley yells back “You were the one who stood me up and left me sitting at a restaurant all by myself two weeks ago, I think you’re the one who needs to grow up Michael. I’ll do this project myself and I’ll toss your name on it, because I honestly can’t stand to be around you right now.” Ashley storms off, leaving Michael standing in his living room with his arms crossed.

Jimmy Cooper opens up his locker and it is abruptly slammed shut by Taylor Rodgers, who is now standing next to Jimmy with a menacing look on his face. He glares at Jimmy and says “I’m not stupid Cooper. I know it was you who put itching powder in my clothes, and some other crap in my shampoo, and put that whoopee cushion under the teacher’s chair, and I’m gonna make something very clear to you right now. I know you’re supposed to be studying with my girl tonight, and all I can say is, that’s not gonna happen. If you do decide to meet up with her tonight, you might wanna look into picking up a wheelchair because I hear it’s pretty tough to walk with two broken legs.” Taylor storms off, leaving Jimmy standing at his locker with a look of fear on his face.

Michael knocks at Professor Harper’s door. Professor Harper tells him to come in, and Michael sits down across from him. Professor Harper “So what brings you in Michael? You should be spending all your free time right now on this group project, not on seeing me.” Michael replies “Well you see professor, that’s actually the reason why I’m here. I know we discussed this at the beginning of the term, but I really feel at this point like Ashley and I just cannot work together on this. We have a lot of history together and it is becoming a toxic situation that is just going to hurt the both of us in relation to this class as a result. Is there any way you can reconsider and let us change partners, or at the very least, let us do the assignments on our own?” Professor Harper thinks for a moment before replying “Michael, we’re three quarters of the way through the term, no one is going to want to switch partners at this point even if that was an option. As for letting you do the project individually, that’s suicide. There’s no way any student could do this entire project on their own. I’m sorry Michael, but my answer is still the same, you can’t switch partners. Whatever the issue between the two of you, work it out. School should come before any outside conflicts, understood?” Michael nods his head and gets up to leave. As he’s about to step out, Professor Harper says “I’m expecting a great presentation from you two, don’t disappoint me, and more importantly, don’t disappoint yourself.” Michael nods and leaves.

Jimmy Cooper is blowing up balloons at Kramllah. Pierre Moxley walks by and criticizes the Mickey Mouse balloon Jimmy just blew up before storming off. Jennifer Ward walks up to Jimmy and asks “So are we still on for our study session later tonight? See you at my house at 7?” Jimmy begins to look extremely nervous before blurting out “Oh, I completely forgot, I can’t make it tonight.” Jennifer inquires “But why not?” Jimmy hesitates nervously before responding “Umm, I have to go to the dentist. I’m having some major toothaches. I’m sorry Jennifer.” Jennifer looks disappointed but then says “It’s okay, I understand. Hopefully we can get together some time this weekend to go over this stuff then. Gotta get back to the register, I’ll talk to you later Jimmy.” Jennifer heads back to the front of the store while Jimmy looks on with a disappointed look on his face.

Michael is lying on his bed in his apartment when he pulls out a picture of himself and Ashley when they were 8 years old. The scene turns into a flashback and the year is now 1996. Michael and Ashley had just finished competing in a bicycle race in which Michael barely beat her out. After the race, Ashley accuses Michael of cheating and Michael denies it while happily hoisting up his trophy over his head. Ashley storms off and leaves Michael alone to celebrate. A few minutes later, Michael spots Ashley sitting alone on a park bench fighting back tears. He offers Ashley the trophy to make her feel better but she says she doesn’t want it and to just leave her alone. Michael leaves and finds a yellow daffodil nearby. He quickly pulls it from the ground and brings it to Ashley who smiles as she takes the pretty flower. The flashback ends with Ashley giving Michael a big hug and apologizing for accusing him of cheating.

Ashley Reed is sitting in her front room, frustrated while working on the group project that she and Michael are supposed to be doing together. The doorbell rings and Ashley yells to her parents upstairs that she will get it. When she opens the door, she finds Michael standing on her doorstep with a single yellow daffodil in his hand. He pauses for a second before saying “I’m sorry for being a jerk Ms. Reed.” Slowly Ashley lets out a smile and replies “There you go again with that unbelievable memory of yours. Don’t consider yourself off the hook yet Mr. Bailey, you have a lot more making up to do than just bringing me a yellow daffodil, and you can start by getting your butt into the living room with me so we can get moving on this ridiculously time consuming project.” Michael replies “Sounds good to me.” Michael and Ashley sit down and begin working on the project. At this same moment, the guy Michael saw Ashley hop into a car with previously walks down the stairs and says “Alright Ashley, I’m heading home. Your dad is gonna drive me to the dealership to pick up my car. I had to get some things fixed before I head back to New York. Hopefully I’ll see you guys again for Christmas.” Ashley gets up and gives him a hug and says “Thanks for coming to visit Robbie. Hopefully Aunt Christine can make it out next time with you.” Michael has a shocked look on his face as he says “Robbie, your cousin Robbie. I can’t believe it, you look so different.” Robbie replies with a big smile “If it isn’t Michael Bailey. Ashley told me you were living out here now, what a small world. Well it was nice seeing you again Michael. Sorry to cut this short, but Uncle Dan is waiting in the garage for me, the dealership closes in a half hour. You guys take care now.” Robbie walks out the front door and Ashley looks at Michael who has an embarrassed look on his face. Michael finally says “Wow, your cousin looks way different than I remember him.” Ashley replies “Yep, he’s no “brace-face” anymore and he started hitting up the gym when he joined his college baseball team.” Michael replies “Well then, let’s just forget that little misunderstanding ever happened.” Ashley smiles and replies “Yeah, thanks for accusing me of going on a date with my cousin, dork!” Michael and Ashley share a laugh as the credits start to roll.

Episode 10 ~ New York State of Mind

Michael and Ashley are finishing up their presentation in Professor Harper’s class. The class gives a loud applause as the entertaining presentation is now complete. Professor Harper asks Michael and Ashley to stay after class to discuss something with him. All the other students have now left the classroom, and Professor Harper walks up to Michael and Ashley and says “You both took an extremely difficult topic and put a fresh and unique spin on it. That honestly was one of the best presentations I have had the pleasure of experiencing in one of my classrooms. I have some extremely good news for the both of you. Every year, the University of Chicago sends two students from one of my classes to speak at the Annual Engineering & Structural Development Conference in New York. Normally, I send two students from my upper level courses, but you two did so well with this presentation that I can’t imagine finding any pair better fit to represent our school than the two of you. What do you say?” Michael and Ashley are excited at first, but as the reality of the situation sets in, their smiles turn to serious expressions of doubt. Professor Harper notices this and asks “What’s the problem?” Michael replies “There’s no problem, it’s just something I think we need to think about. How long do we have to decide?” Professor Harper replies with a shocked expression “What is there to think about? Do you have any idea the amount of exposure this will bring the two of you in the field of engineering? This is the big time; the contacts you make at this conference will be the people you will be glad you met when it’s time to look for a job after graduation. This is a no brainer guys.” Ashley looks at Michael before responding “We’ll do it. There’s nothing to think about. Thank you for this amazing opportunity Professor Harper.” Professor Harper lets out a smile before saying “That’s good to hear, someone will be in contact with the two of you regarding your itinerary. Oh by the way, you’ll be leaving for the conference tomorrow, good luck.” Michael and Ashley have shocked expressions on their faces while Professor Harper exits the classroom.

Michael knocks on the door to Pierre’s office and Pierre responds by asking him the secret password. Michael gives a frustrated look before replying “There’s no better stance, than living in France.” Pierre opens the door with a big smile on his face and says “Good boy. You may come in.” Pierre sits down at his desk and Michael sits down across from him. Pierre tells Michael “Two new hairs, just this week…see them?” Pierre starts pointing to some strands of hair that are coming in on his bald forehead. Michael looks up and says “Yes, yes indeed, there they are Pierre. Now I really need to talk to you about…” Pierre interrupts, pulling a bottle of Rogaine out from under his desk “This stuff is just absolutely amazing. I should have a full head of hair again in no time.” Michael replies “Definitely Pierre, definitely. But back to why I stopped by…” Pierre interrupts again “Oh of course, it’s all about you. Typical American.” Michael replies “Yep, exactly…and, back to what I was saying. I’ve been invited to represent my school on a trip to New York for a prestigious engineering conference. I really need to get this weekend off...” Pierre replies with a shocked look on his face “You come into my office, sit in the chair across from me, and tell me that you need this very weekend off, a mere two days in advance?! You must be joking!” Michael thinks fast and asks “Were you aware that Rogaine actually comes in a foam version now? It’s very hard to get though; you have to wait months on a list to get your hands on some.” Pierre replies “A foam version you say? That would be so much easier.” Michael replies “You might be in luck. I actually have a friend who works at a beauty shop. She can get me as much Rogaine foam as I want. And one more thing, it’s supposed to be twice as effective.” Pierre replies with a desperate look “Twice as effective???” Michael replies “Twice as effective.” Pierre replies “So instead of two hairs?” Michael whispers “Four hairs.” Pierre smiles wildly and replies “I have to have it. You bring me the Rogaine foam, and you can have the weekend off.” Michael and Pierre shake hands and Michael leaves the office while Pierre continues to admire the two new strands of hair on his head.

Michael and Jimmy Cooper are talking by the balloon station at Kramllah and Michael is retelling the story of what just happened with Pierre. Jimmy asks Michael “A wait-list for Rogaine foam? He seriously bought that?” Michael smiles and replies “Yes, he actually did. If there’s one way to get on Pierre’s good side, it’s to help him with his hair loss crusade.” Jimmy asks Michael “So honestly, how do you think it’s gonna go this weekend between you and Ashley?” Michael looks at Jimmy and says “I feel like a broken record every time you ask me this question, but I honestly have no idea. I guess we’ll find out.”

Michael and Ashley are sitting on the plane waiting for it to take off on their trip to New York. Ashley looks at Michael and says “I hope you’re not mad I told Professor Harper that we’d do this without getting your input.” Michael replies “Not mad at all Ash, it should be a good time.” The plane starts to pick up speed as it prepares for takeoff and Michael notices that Ashley is becoming slightly scared. Michael extends his hand to Ashley, and she grabs it and holds on tight as the plane takes off.

Michael and Ashley are carrying their luggage as they walk up to the hotel concierge. They give the hotel staff their names and the staff tells them that due to their reservation being so last minute, they only had one room available for the two of them. Michael and Ashley both look slightly frustrated but eventually agree that it is not a big deal. As they are going up the elevator to their room, Ashley says “It’s no biggie. We can deal with this.” Michael replies “Yeah, not an issue at all.” As the two open the door to their hotel room, they both have a look of shock on their faces as they open the door and realize there is only one bed. Michael calls down to the concierge, who tells him that there are no cots available either. Michael says to Ashley “It’s fine, I can sleep on the chair.” Ashley replies “Don’t be silly Michael. You’re sleeping in the bed with me. If this was a tent and we were outside, it would be just like old times.” Michael and Ashley ready themselves for bed and start discussing a camping trip they had in the backyard of Michael’s summer home when they both were 11. Michael and Ashley have now both hopped into bed. Michael replies “You know Ms. Reed, you were a cover hog then, it’s nice to know that some things never change” as he playfully pulls some of the covers back on to his side. Ashley pulls back on the covers and tells Michael “My cover hogging has nothing on your snoring Mr. Bailey!” Michael says “Hey now!” and turns over, finding himself nose to nose with Ashley. They start leaning in very slowly towards each other (this takes place over the course of a few minutes) and just as their lips are about to meet, Ashley falls fast asleep. Michael has a look of desire on his face as he watches her for a few seconds as she sleeps. He then kisses Ashley on the forehead before closing his eyes and falling asleep as well.

Michael is awoken by a fully dressed and primped Ashley pounding on his stomach. “Time to wake up Mr. Reed. We’ve got lots of sights to see, and very little time to do so, so get your butt out of bed ASAP.” The next scene is a montage of Michael and Ashley visiting all of the big tourist spots in NYC, including Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. They are laughing and smiling with each other the whole time, enjoying each other’s company and having an all-around great time. While standing atop the Empire State Building, Ashley looks at Michael and asks “Have you ever in your life seen something as beautiful as this view?” Michael looks at the view, a view that includes Ashley in it, and says “Ms. Reed, I can honestly say that I have never seen anything as beautiful as what I’m looking at right now.” Ashley and Michael both smile at each other as they relish the beauty of the moment they are spending with one another. The next scene cuts to the end of their presentation at the conference, which is met with a standing ovation from the people in attendance. As they are leaving the stage, one of the members in the audience hops up to give Michael and Ashley his card “You tell Ole’ Harper that he needs to find more students like the two of you, and that he better show up next year, it’s been too long. And also, when it comes time for the both of you to look for jobs after graduation, hopefully you’ll keep my company in mind.” Michael and Ashley thank the gentleman and continue on. Once they get back to their seats, Michael looks to Ashley and says “Nice work Ms. Reed.” Ashley replies “Not too shabby yourself Mr. Bailey.” Michael and Ashley both share a smile as the camera pans out and the scene fades to black.

Episode 11 "The Ghost of Christmas Past & The Hope of Christmas Future"
Pierre Moxley has gathered all employees to the front of the store for a brief morning meeting. He is dressed up as Santa Clause and declares “Ho….Ho….Ho….Everything must go….go…..go….., That is the message I want you all to clearly get. I’m not keeping any of this silly crap in my warehouse year round. After December 25th, this is all worthless to me, so sell it, or you’ll be receiving an early Christmas present from me, your walking papers. Also, please pick up an elf hat before we open the doors today. You are required to wear this hat for the remainder of the Christmas season. I’ve already taken the liberty of deducting the cost of the hat out of your paychecks, so consider this my way of saying Merry Christmas to each and every one of you.” Pierre has an extremely creepy smile on his face as he adjourns the meeting and proceeds to the front door to open the store.

Michael and Jimmy walk over to the balloon station and start up a conversation with each other. Michael says “The trip was great. New York is one of the most unique cities I have ever been to. You can’t imagine how many people are there. I thought Chicago was a busy place; New York is on a completely different level. Not to mention, all the sights were absolutely amazing.” Jimmy replies “That’s great and all, but what I really want to know is, what happened with Ashley?” Michael replies “Nothing happened; we had a really nice time together. Not so much as one argument or issue, it was just really nice to spend some time with her again. I don’t know though…. I think I’ll always have a fear in the back of my mind that she might just up and leave again with no explanation. I think that really keeps me from jumping head first into anything with her. If I only knew why she disappeared.” Jimmy replies “That’s understandable, but some things in life are unknown for a reason. Whatever you decide, as your friend, I’ll back you 100%.” Michael replies “Thanks Jimmy, I appreciate it.” At this moment, Jennifer Ward walks up and greets Michael and Jimmy. She says “Hey guys, can I talk to you for a sec Jimmy?” Jimmy nods his head and he and Jennifer walk a few feet away from Michael. Jennifer says “Listen, I just wanted to apologize to you. I heard about Taylor threatening you and telling you that you can’t hang out with me, and I gave him a good talking to over it. He won’t be bothering you anymore. I’ve made it very clear to him that he isn’t in charge of making any decisions in my life. So again, I’m really sorry.” Jimmy replies “It’s no big deal.” Jennifer says “We’ve got a big test coming up Monday, I was wondering if you would want to get together Saturday night to study?” Jimmy replies “Yeah, that works for me. You wanna just come over around 6?” Jennifer replies “6 sounds great, I’ll be there! Better get back to the register before Pierre starts flipping out. I’ll see you Saturday!” As Jennifer starts walking back towards the register, Jimmy walks back towards Michael and slyly gives him a high five in passing.

Michael is putting away boxes of Christmas cards onto the shelf when he hears a familiar voice call out from behind him. “Nice hat Mr. Bailey.” Michael turns around to see Ashley standing behind him with a big smile on her face. Michael replies “You think so Ms. Reed? I was thinking I’d look better in something more along the lines of a Frosty the Snowman-like top hat.” Ashley and Michael both start laughing and Ashley replies “Well in that case Frosty, I just wanted to ask you if you had any plans for Christmas.” Michael replies “Not at the moment Ash. My cousins have been asking me to head out to Nashville to spend Christmas with them, but I doubt I can get enough time off from here to make the trip, not unless they invented a new type of Rogaine.” Ashley has a confused look on her face and says “I’m not even gonna ask… I wanted to let you know that you’re invited to spend Christmas Eve with my family if you want. It’s just me and my parents so it would be great to add some extra spunk to the evening.” Michael replies “That’s really nice of you to offer Ash, but I think I’m gonna just relax and catch up on some much needed sleep. Plus, I’m gonna be working here pretty late on Christmas Eve, all the last minute shoppers. Please thank your family for the invite though.” Ashley “I completely understand. Just so you know though, the offer is still on the table if you change your mind. I gotta run, if I don’t see you, have a nice Christmas Michael.” Ashley gives Michael a hug and Michael replies “You too Ash.”

Michael is setting up a Christmas tree in the living room of his apartment. He begins pulling out old boxes of ornaments. His eye catches glimpse of one old ornament in particular, and a flashback begins. It is now Christmas 2007, and Michael is asking his mother Kathryn where he should hang a particular ornament. Kathryn replies “That old thing? Hang it in a spot where no one can see it.” Michael laughs and puts the old ornament in a prominent location, prompting his mother to begin laughing as well. Kathryn replies “How did I know you were going to do that?” Michael and his mother continue happily putting up ornaments while listening to Christmas music on the radio. Michael’s mother brings up Ashley, and asks Michael if he’s heard from her recently. Michael says “it’s been two years Mom, I’m pretty sure that ship has sailed.” Kathryn “I don’t know what happened son, but there must be a reason for this. If it’s meant to be, you’ll see her again.” Michael changes the subject and talks about the gift he’s going to surprise his parents with “You have no idea what I’m getting you two this year, and I definitely don’t plan on giving any hints.” At this point, Michael’s father comes in quietly with a lost look on his face. Michael turns off the music Kathryn asks “What’s wrong John? Did you get laid off honey?” John sits down and says “No honey, it’s nothing work-related at all…. Remember how I went to the doctor a few days ago for my yearly check-up and they said they had some slight concerns and wanted to run a few tests? Well the test results came back…” At this point, John is fighting back tears and Kathryn and Michael are hanging on his every word. John continues “I’ve been diagnosed with Stage 2 prostate cancer.” Kathryn erupts into tears after hearing the news and begins shouting uncontrollably “No John! Please no!” John attempts to calm down his wife as tears begin to well up in Michael’s eyes. John replies “Honey, please, please settle down. The doctor told me that it hasn’t spread to anywhere else in my body just yet, so there’s hope that we may have caught it in time. He told me that I need to undergo chemotherapy immediately. I promise you, I will fight through this and everything will be ok. I’m not going anywhere.” Kathryn continues crying and Michael and his father continue to console her. John repeats while holding his wife “I’m not going anywhere honey, I promise.” Flashback to present day; Michael has a single tear fall down his face as he looks up at a picture of his family on the wall as he puts the same old ornament in a prominent location on the new tree in his apartment.

Jimmy Cooper and Jennifer Ward are in Jimmy’s kitchen studying together. After finishing their study session, Jennifer and Jimmy start making small talk about their plans for Christmas when they are interrupted by a loud horn coming from the driveway. They both get up to see what it is and when they reach the front door, they see Taylor blasting his music and laying on the horn of his Mustang. Jennifer rushes out the front door and starts yelling at Taylor, who eventually turns his music down. As they continue arguing, eventually Taylor comes out of his car and apologizes to Jimmy for being rude. He then wishes Jimmy a Merry Christmas and hops back in his car. Jennifer walks back to Jimmy and motions for him to return to the kitchen with her. Jimmy replies “What about Taylor?” Jennifer smiles and replies “He can wait, now what were we talking about?” Jimmy and Jennifer sit down again at the table and continue having a nice conversation.

Ashley and her family are seated for dinner on Christmas Eve. There’s a knock at the door and Ashley goes to open it. Michael is standing at the door with some homemade Christmas cookies. “Invitation still valid Ms. Reed?” Ashley looks at him and smiles “Definitely Mr. Bailey, you’re right on time.” Michael replies “I hope you’re not letting me in just for the cookies, I had one on the cab ride on the way here and they are absolutely terrible.” Ashley smiles and replies “It’s the thought that counts. I’m glad you decided to take me up on the invite.” Michael replies after a slight pause “Me too.” Michael walks into the dining room with Ashley and is greeted by Ashley’s parents. Ashley’s father says “I’m glad you could make it Michael.” Michael replies “Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Reed for the invitation. I’m glad to be here as well.” Ashley’s mother says “It’s definitely good to see you Michael Bailey. Let’s say grace before the food gets cold!” Everyone takes the hand of the person sitting next to them while Ashley’s mother says a nice prayer that ends with “And thank you for blessing us with an old friend at our table today Lord who is always welcome in our home. Amen.”

Michael is asleep in his bed when he is awoken by a knock at the door. He stumbles out of bed and opens the front door to find Ashley standing before him. She smiles at Michael as she comes in and sits down. “I know it’s a bit early but I wanted to come over and give you your gift.” Michael replies “Ash, you didn’t need to get me anything…” Ashley cuts him off “Oh shush, just open it.” Ashley pulls out a gift wrapped item and hands it to Michael. Michael opens it and sees a beautifully framed picture of him and Ashley with his parents. A tear falls down Michael’s face as he thanks her for the gift. Ashley replies “I can’t imagine how hard it is for you this year, spending your first Christmas without both of your parents. I just want you to know Michael, that if you ever want to talk about anything at all, I’m here for you. Ok?” Michael nods his head and says “That means a lot to me Ash. I really appreciate you saying that.” Michael and Ashley share a hug before Michael pulls away and says “I have something for you too.” Michael runs off to his room and comes out with a gift wrapped package. Ashley opens it and reveals a trophy that says Age 10 and Under “2 Mile Bike Ride Challenge Champion.” Michael smiles and says “I feel like I can finally admit this now. I totally cut through the forest right before the last turn.” Ashley “Michael Bailey, I just knew it! I knew I never saw you pass me up! You big jerk you!” Ashley playfully shoves Michael, who replies “Come on, I couldn’t lose to a girl. The guys would have never let me live that down.” Michael and Ashley share a good laugh. After a few minutes of reminiscing about old times, Ashley looks at her watch and says “Oh wow, I really should be getting back to my family, if they’re awake they are probably wondering where I ran off to.” Michael and Ashley start to walk towards the door. Michael says “Well thank you for the nice picture, it brings back lots of memories Ash. And thanks for making this a really meaningful Christmas.” Ashley gives Michael a big hug and says “Christmas isn’t over yet, I’ll see you soon.” Ashley walks out and closes the front door behind her. Michael starts to look at the picture he just received from Ashley when he hears another knock at the door. He has a confused look on his face as he walks up to the door. He opens it to find Ashley once again standing in front of him with a sheet of paper that simply says “Look Up.” As Michael looks up, he notices some mistletoe hanging on the door frame. By the time he looks down again, Ashley has already moved in position right in front of him and the two share a very nice kiss. After the long kiss, Michael and Ashley are both left smiling and speechless. The moment of speechlessness finally ends when Ashley says “Merry Christmas Mr. Bailey” and then once again leaves. Michael is left standing at his front door with a huge smile on his face as the scene fades to black.

Episode 12 "Flashback II"
Michael is sitting on his bed taking a look at the picture Ashley gave him for Christmas. The inscription at the bottom says “The Best Summer of My Life” and shows Michael (with a wide-eyed look on his face) standing next to Ashley and his parents. As Michael looks off into the background of the picture, the scene morphs back to the beginning of the summer of 2005, and Michael and his parents are pulling up to their summer home. Michael and his father John start pulling their luggage from the car when out of the bushes hops Ashley Reed with a loud “Booo.” John and Michael both almost fall over from being surprised as Michael’s mother Kathryn looks on from the car laughing as she says “Is that Ashley Reed? Wow, you look so beautiful honey. It is always good to see you.” John replies “It’s always good to see you indeed. If I saw you before you jumped out, maybe I wouldn’t have looked like a frightened schoolgirl!” Everyone shares a laugh and Ashley offers to help carry in some of the luggage. Michael waives her off and says that he can handle it and Ashley replies “Still the same old stubborn Michael Bailey huh?” Michael gives Ashley a smart look, and Mrs. Bailey replies “You kids probably have a lot of catching up to do. We’ll be inside getting everything in order. Ashley, you let your parents know we had better be seeing them soon for dinner sometime this week. We’d love to have you all over.” Ashley replies “I most certainly will Mrs. Bailey.” Mr. Bailey says with a laugh “Good seeing you Ashley, hopefully you’ll appear out of plain view next time!” Michael’s parents head inside and leave Michael and Ashley standing together. Michael says “I gotta say Ash, you look way different than last summer.” Ashley smiles and replies “Well, my parents finally let me get contacts and as you can see, no more braces!” Michael smiles and says “Well let me help my family for a bit with getting everything set up. Can you meet by the dock in an hour or so?” Ashley smiles and says “I will see you there Mr. Bailey.” Ashley runs off and Michael watches her leave with a wide-eyed look on his face.

Michael is sitting by the dock looking out over the ocean when hands from behind cover his face “Guess who?” Michael replies “Hmmm, please let it be Jennifer Love Hewitt.” Ashley replies “Guess again Mr. Bailey.” Michael replies “Well now it’s easy, only one person important to me calls me Mr. Bailey. You are obviously my English literature teacher Mr. Johnson.” Ashley playfully takes her hands off Michael’s eyes and says “very funny.” Ashley takes a seat next to Michael on the dock and asks “So why is it that at the end of every summer, we always say that we’re going to write each other and we do for like two months, and then it just stalls?” Michael replies “It was your fault this time Ms. Reed. I do believe I sent the last letter.” Ashley replies “Nuh uh. I totally sent you the last letter.” After going back and forth for a while, both Michael and Ashley end up laughing about the situation. Michael says “You know it’s crazy Ash, we could go a whole six months without talking to each other, and then when we see each other again, it feels like no time at all has passed.” Ashley replies “I know what you mean. It’s like we can go right back to being super close without having any awkward introductory periods. I like that about our friendship, I just wish we didn’t always drift during the fall, winter, and spring.” Michael replies “Well, let’s make an effort to change that the next time. We’ll come up with some rules or something. And I’ll save copies of letters I send you so I can have evidence that it is your fault!” Ashley gives Michael a playful shove and asks “So Mr. Bailey, anything new and exciting happen to you this year?” Michael replies “Nothing too earth shattering.” Ashley asks “Any luck on the girlfriend front?” Michael laughs “Oh Ms. Reed, nothing materializing. You know me, I’m far too picky. How about you? Any new boys in your life?” Ashley’s eyes dart away for a brief second before returning to Michael “Not really. I mean, there was this one boy who actually got really interested in me over the course of the year, but I had to tell him that I only saw him and I as friends. Other than that situation, not so much.” Michael replies “Oh Ms. Reed, you heartbreaker! How are your parents doing?” Ashley is at ease again as she replies “They’re doing great, you’ll have to come over soon and see them. They’ve been asking about you.” Michael replies “Well I’m sure you guys will be heading over for dinner soon.” Ashley nods her head. Ashley stands up and grabs Michael’s hands to stand him up next to her. She says “I think I finally have a special dive that you can’t top.” Michael asks “And what might that be?” Ashley replies “This!” as she does a moonsault off the dock into the water. Michael has a shocked look on his face as he says “I can’t do that, but I can do THIS” as Michael gets a running start and does a forward somersault into the water. He and Ashley are eye to eye treading water as Michael says “I have a feeling this is gonna be a great summer.” Ashley’s eyes lock with Michael’s as she replies “Me too.”

The next scene is a montage of the first half of the Summer of 2005, filled with various scenes, set to the Lifehouse song “You & Me.” Scenes of Ashley and Michael’s families enjoying dinner together and playing a variety of games like charades and hangman eventually segway into scenes of Michael and Ashley growing more closely together. These scenes include Michael and Ashley taking turns pushing each other on a swing, diving off the dock into the ocean, enjoying some ice cream together, and facing each other in a race that Michael lets Ashley win. The music continues to play in the background as the next scene is of Michael and Ashley sitting on the dock watching a spectacular fireworks display put on by the owners of the summer homes. Michael replies “I can totally tell that the last one they shot off was one of your Dad’s. It has his personality written all over it.” Ashley laughs and replies “I actually think you’re right. My dad always picks the strange looking ones.” Michael and Ashley are very close to one another, and Michael asks her in a slightly nervous tone “Ash, I’ve actually wanted to talk to you about something…” Michael starts stuttering slightly as Ashley has now turned completely towards him. “I…I know we’ve always been friends and nothing more, and that used to make sense to me. But lately, I’ve been having a whole bunch of different feelings inside about us, and I guess what I’m getting at, uhh… the question I’m trying to ask you is…” Ashley puts her finger over Michael’s lips and the two share an amazing first kiss as fireworks shoot off overhead in the background. After the kiss ends, Michael has a very surprised look on his face as Ashley says “The answer is yes, I’d love to be your girlfriend Michael Bailey.” The music returns to the forefront as more scenes of Michael and Ashley spending time together continue to roll. After a few various scenes, the next scene is of Michael and Ashley walking into Ashley’s summer home. Michael looks very unsure about things and says “You’re absolutely positive your parents aren’t going to be coming home?” Ashley replies “Don’t worry so much Michael.” Michael replies “And you’re sure you’re ok with this? I don’t want you to feel like I’m rushing you into anything. I know we haven’t been official for very long…” Ashley puts her finger over Michael’s lips once again and says “We’ve known each other for fourteen years, I’m absolutely positive about this. I’m ready if you are.” Michael says “I’m ready Ash” and Ashley leads him into her bedroom and shuts the door. The music returns to the forefront as more scenes of Michael and Ashley spending time together are shown. The music returns to the background as Michael and Ashley are now on a boat ride with Michael’s parents, enjoying a beautiful day at sea. They return back to Michael’s summer house and Ashley stops everyone in their tracks “Hold it everyone! Before you guys head back inside, we’re taking a picture to remember this beautiful day.” Michael’s parents and Michael stop to pose as Ashley sets up the timer on the camera to take the picture. She quickly hustles back and whispers into Michael’s ear “I love you Michael.” Michael’s eyes grow wide with surprise just as the photo is snapped. The scene morphs to present time with Michael holding the picture in his hands. He lies back in bed and says to himself “I love you too Ash, but I really need to know why you disappeared.” The music ends as the scene fades to black.

Episode 13 "Revelations"
Jimmy Cooper is in the process of blowing up fifty different balloons. Michael walks over to him and asks “Is it just me, or does that seem like a lot of balloons.” Jimmy replies helplessly “It’s a lot of balloons.” At this point, Pierre Moxley walks over and says to Jimmy “We have to deliver these balloons personally to the customer. Here is their address.” Pierre hands Jimmy the card and walks away. Jimmy shouts out “Milwaukee?!?! It’s gonna take three trips to get there. You can’t be serious Pierre.” Pierre continues walking away and leaves Jimmy standing with a look of disbelief on his face. Michael turns to Jimmy and says “Doesn’t your neighbor drive a school bus?” Jimmy replies “Yep, a pretty big one too.” Michael asks “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” The notion finally pops in Jimmy’s head and a smile comes over his face. Cut scene to Michael and Jimmy driving down the interstate with a bus filled with balloons, blasting some old school 70’s rock. Jimmy says “I can’t believe she said yes.’ Michael replies “I think it had more to do with the fact that she hates her job and hopes we never come back with this thing.” Jimmy replies “Maybe that’s why she only wants me to drive it.”

Ashley Reed is sitting in her room looking at old pictures of her and Michael. Her mother walks in and sits down on the bed beside her. Mrs. Reed asks “Have you told him yet?” Ashley shakes her head quietly. Mrs. Reed replies “He deserves to know Ashley. How can you have a fresh start if you don’t clear this up with him? He has no idea why you disappeared from his life for so long. For all that boy has gone through, you owe that to him.” Ashley replies “I have my reasons mom, and you know all of them. This is a part of my past that I’d much rather forget than keep reliving. I might feel like I’m out of the woods for now, but for all I know, that sense of security can be taken away from me at any minute.” Mrs. Reed replies “Ashley, that is completely unlikely. There is no reason to be afraid anymore.” Ashley replies “Even if that is true, what if the reason isn’t good enough mom? What if I tell him and he decides that it isn’t enough to explain vanishing on him for four years? What if he never wants to see me again?” Mrs. Reed replies “I don’t think that will be the case Ashley. I really do feel like you have put this off long enough and it will be a weight lifted off your shoulders when you finally tell him what happened.” Ashley replies “I want to mom, I just don’t think I’m ready yet.” Ashley begins to cry on her mother’s shoulder as her mother consoles her. Mrs. Reed replies “If you’re not ready, you’re not ready.”

Michael and Jimmy are cruising down the highway with a bus full of balloons. Jimmy asks Michael “Okay, so the million dollar question. What is the current state of affairs with you and Ashley?” Michael replies “As per usual, I have no idea.” Jimmy replies “Come on man, she kissed you on Christmas. How can you still have no idea about where this is going? She likes you, you like her. You two just need to be together, seriously.” Michael replies “I would love for that to be the case, but I just don’t think we can have a fresh start until we clear everything up. She still hasn’t told me why she disappeared on me and until I have that closure, I am not going to be able to move forward with this. For all I know, she could disappear on me tomorrow. I need to know why she left, and until I do, this can’t go any further.” Jimmy replies “I completely understand what you’re saying, but maybe she’s just really embarrassed about whatever it was. Or maybe it was something extremely personal. Honestly, maybe it’s better that you don’t know what it is. Just live in the moment and enjoy what you have right now.” Michael replies “I’ll give that some thought, but for me, that would be easier said than done. By the way, how are things with Ms. Jennifer?” Jimmy replies “Going well. She still is dating Tayler of course, but we’re making progress. We’ve been working on assignments together pretty much the past three weekends.” Michael replies “I’m telling you, she’ll wake up and smell the cocoa eventually. That guy is a big tool.” Jimmy replies “We shall see, I’m keeping my fingers crossed. So how much longer till we get to this place?” Michael replies “Shouldn’t be much longer if the GPS on my iPhone is correct.”

Ashley Reed knocks on the door to Professor Harper’s office. Professor Harper says to come in, and Ashley takes a seat across from him. Professor Harper begins “Ashley, thanks for stopping in. I wanted to talk to you about the work you’ve done in my class. You see, the group assignments that you have completed with Michael are some of the most well thought out presentations that I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing over the course of my thirty year career. These have been passionate, well-thought out pieces of work that I’d be happy to submit to several engineering publications. On the other hand, I don’t get that same sense of passion on the pieces you have handed in on your own. They are good papers, but they are far from what you produce when teamed up with Mr. Bailey. I guess I just wanted to get your thoughts on what might be lacking in your personal work.” Ashley pauses before saying “Well, the truth is Professor, I don’t have any desire to become an engineer. The field is fascinating and I’ve really enjoyed your lectures on it, but I really did not sign up for this class to become an engineer.” Professor Harper replies “That is very surprising to hear Ashley. I don’t think anyone has ever taken this course as an elective. Normally, people avoid this course at all costs. If you don’t mind me asking, why did you take this course then?” Ashley replies “The answer I have is a silly one, but basically, I took it because Michael was in the class. He and I have history and hadn’t talked in a few years, so I wanted to think of a natural way to slide back into his life.” Professor Harper has a surprised look on his face “No wonder all the prior conflicts between the two of you. There is truth to the saying that out of great friction comes great results. You two truly make a great team… Well Ashley, everything is a bit clearer to me now, but if you ever change your mind and decide to give the field of engineering another try, just know that we would be honored to have you.” Ashley replies “Thank you Professor. And just to be sure, everything we discussed will stay between you and I correct?” Professor Harper replies “Most certainly. Thanks for stopping in.” Ashley shakes Professor Harper’s hand and leaves the room.

Michael and Jimmy end up in the middle of nowhere. Jimmy replies “So much for technology.” Michael is trying to get service with his iPhone when he notices the error in his ways. Michael says to Jimmy “Did you say Dove Street or Cove Street?” Jimmy replies “Dove street.” Michael replies “Ah, I tell ya, the C’s and the D’s are so close together on this tiny keyboard.”

Michael and Jimmy finally arrive at their intended location and drop off all the balloons. As they are driving back, Michael tells Jimmy “You know, I think you may be right. I need to stop living in the past and just focus on the present. I don’t need to end up on Cove Street because of my own stupidity when I’m already on Dove street. I’m going to tell Ashley tonight that I want to be with her and I don’t care about why she left. Tomorrow is never guaranteed in this life, I need to stop pushing things away.” Jimmy replies “I think that is the best news I’ve heard all day. Now let’s get this bus back before the kids on my neighbor’s bus route freeze to death waiting at their stops.”

Ashley knocks on her mother’s door. Her mother tells her to come in and Ashley sits down next to her. Ashley says “I’m going to tell him, he deserves to know. Whatever the consequences may be, I’m going to face them head on. I’ve been carrying this for too long. I want to be with him and this is the only way to make that happen.” Ashley’s mother replies “I think that is for the best honey, I really do.” Ashley and her mother embrace.

Ashley is asleep in bed when she hears a noise coming from her window. She hops out of bed to see that it is Michael throwing pebbles from below. Ashley has a surprised look on her face as Michael waives for her to come downstairs. She signals that she will be down in one minute. Ashley opens the front door to find Michael standing in front of her. He says “I’m sorry to come by at this ridiculous time of night, but I have something I really need to say to you, and I didn’t want to waste another day without letting you know this. I love you Ashley Reed, I’ve never stopped loving you, and it doesn’t even matter to me anymore why you left. I’ve spent the last four years dwelling on the past and on might have been’s. All that matters is that you’re here now, I’m here now, and I really want us to be together. Let’s forget the past Ash and focus on our future.” Ashley pauses for a moment and seems to be in a state of conflicted thought. She then starts to cry before saying “I’ve never stopped loving you either Michael Bailey.” The two embrace and share an emotional kiss as the scene fades to black.

Episode 14 "Hearts in Pain"
Michael and Jimmy are walking into work together. Jimmy asks Michael “So after all this waiting, how does it feel to finally have the girl of your dreams all to yourself?” Michael replies “Honestly, no joke, it has been absolutely amazing.” A montage of the past few weeks is shown of Michael and Ashley spending lots of time with each other. Going to the movies, ice skating at Millennium Park, attending a Jimmy Eat World concert, and just relaxing together at Michael’s apartment, enjoying each other’s company. Back to present day, Michael replies thinking about it “I can’t believe we’ve been together for three weeks now, it seems like that crazy road trip you and I took happened just yesterday. I’ll say this, without us ending up in the middle of nowhere, I don’t think it would have dawned on me to just let life happen and not focus so much on the past. Thanks for being there with me for that revelation.” Jimmy replies “Not a problem, it’s good to see you so happy, you deserve it. I gotta ask though, what are the big plans for Valentine’s Day? I know Michael Bailey has to have something big up his sleeve.” Michael replies “Honestly, being so busy with Ashley, school, work….and then there’s Ashley of course, I haven’t had much time to plan anything.” Michael looks at his phone “Oh wow, it’s only a week away. I really need to get cutting on this.” Jimmy replies with a smile “Well, if you need any balloons, I may know someone who can hook you up.”

Michael and Jimmy walk into Kramllah where Pierre is rounding up everyone for a morning meeting. Pierre addresses the group “As you can see, this place is covered with pink and red. We are about to celebrate one of the most unnecessary holidays that has ever been created. Valentine’s Day, a day created by crazy women like my ex-wife who feel the need to stuff their fat faces with pounds of chocolate while being showered with greeting cards and flowers by a loser used car salesman who looks like a poor man’s Bob Barker, but I digress. It is our job to provide that shower by assisting thousands of aimless morons who will probably get dumped within the next month. Nonetheless, get this crap out of my store as soon as possible, that is all. Oh, and also, we have a new cashier. This is….well, I don’t remember your name, didn’t seem too important at the time, what was it?” A relatively shy girl (played by Lacey Chabert) who is actually very attractive mumbles “It’s Ariel.” Pierre replies “Ah yes, whatever. Jennifer, you will be training whatever her name was today.” Jennifer smiles and introduces herself to Ariel as the meeting adjourns.

Jennifer and Ariel are working together at the cashier stand. Jennifer asks Ariel about where she’s from and where she goes to school and Ariel shyly informs her that she goes to private school in the area and is about to graduate in the spring. Jennifer tells Ariel that she’s about to graduate this spring as well. She then tells Ariel not to worry about Pierre and that he’s a big jerk to pretty much everyone. Ariel begins to let her guard down and asks Jennifer “So, what’s the story on the super cute guy over there?” Jennifer looks off and notices Michael and Jimmy working together at the balloon station. Jennifer replies “Ah, that is Michael Bailey. I’m sorry hun, but that one is freshly taken. He just started dating pretty much the most attractive girl in the world. He’s from North Carolina, 21 years old, super smart and super sweet. He’s a real catch.” Ariel begins to have a confused look on her face as she squints off into the distance. She asks Jennifer “Why does his nametag say Jimmy?” Jennifer has a shocked expression on her face as she asks “Oh, you were talking about the one on the left? Really?? Well that’s Jimmy Cooper. He’s a really nice guy, our age, we go to school together. So you were calling him the super cute guy?” Ariel replies “Oh definitely, he’s adorable. The other guy is ok, but Jimmy is way more my type. Is he single?” Jennifer replies in a surprised tone “Umm, yeah, he’s single.” Ariel smiles and the two continue chatting.

Michael and Ashley are relaxing on Michael’s couch watching an episode of “How I Met Your Mother.” Michael says to Ashley “I can’t believe this is your favorite show too.” Ashley replies “Oh, I’ve been watching this since it came out. I am just wondering when we are finally going to meet this mother. She better live up to all the expectations people have built up over the past five years!” Michael and Ashley share a laugh with each other. Ashley asks him “So Mr. Bailey, what are we going to do this weekend, other than work on that project that is due in Professor Harper’s class.” Michael replies with a smile “I have some ideas, but they are top secret.” Ashley replies “Tell me, tell me, tell me.” Michael answers “I’d tell, you, but then I’d have to tickle you to death.” Michael begins tickling Ashley and the two playfully fall to the ground laughing and having a good time.

Michael is working on filling and endcap display at Kramllah when Jimmy walks up beside him. Jimmy asks “So how are the V-Day plans coming?” Michael replies “Oh, they’re coming along a little bit at a time.” Michael and Jimmy continue discussing the holiday craze as the store has been very crowded. Ariel walks by and says hi to Jimmy and continues walking quickly away back to the cashier area. Michael comments “Ya know, in a librarian kinda way, that girl is actually really cute.” Jimmy replies “I guess.” Michael and Jimmy continue working and chatting until Michael is paged over the intercom to come to Pierre’s office. Michael says to Jimmy “This should be good.”

Pierre tells Michael to have a seat and begins yelling at Michael for the way Michael has been setting up everything, telling him that he wants it all redone immediately. Michael tries to tell Pierre that he is following the store layout plan to a T, but Pierre is having nothing of it and tells him to run out and redo it immediately. Michael leaves Pierre’s office with a frustrated look on his face.

When Michael returns to the endcap, he is greeted by an estatic Jimmy Cooper. Jimmy hands Michael and envelope that has red hearts on it. Michael opens it up and begins reading. “Jimmy, this isn’t easy for me to say, there’s obviously some complications about people who work together dating, but I really like you and I’d love for you to be my Valentine. I know this is sudden, but I really don’t want to waste any more time beating around the bush. I just want to take the leap of faith and give this a try. If you wanna find out who I am, meet me at the coffee shop at Madison & Clark tomorrow night at 7PM. Signed, Your Secret Admirer” Michael says “Wow man, who do you think it is?” Jimmy replies “It’s obviously Jennifer. I haven’t heard anything about her and Taylor breaking up, but maybe they have been keeping it quiet. I can’t believe this man, thank you for all the advice you’ve given me over these months. I gotta start preparing for this. Thanks again Michael.” Jimmy runs off as Michael yells “Congrats man.”

Michael is walking towards Pierre’s office and is about to knock on the door. Before he does, he hears Pierre quietly weaping on the other side of the door. Michael knocks and Pierre yells for him to hold on just a minute. After a few seconds, Pierre tells Michael to come in. Michael notices a picture of Pierre and his ex-wife sitting on the desk. When Pierre sees that Michael noticed this, he quickly folds the photo down and out of site. Michael says “I just wanted to let you know that I redid the endcaps.” Pierre says “Good, now get out.” Michael gets up to leave but before walking out the door asks “Are you okay Pierre?” Pierre at first shakes it off like nothing is bothering him, but eventually starts openly weaping in front of Michael, opening up to him that he misses his ex-wife. Michael consoles Pierre and tells him that maybe he should give her a call just to say hello. Pierre slowly stops crying and thanks Michael for the advice. Just as Michael is leaving, Pierre says to Michael “And if you ever even think of telling anyone about this, you will be out of a job faster than you can say Bingo.” Michael shuts the door behind him and says “Now that’s the Pierre I know and loathe.”

Jimmy is dressed to the nines as he walks into the Starbucks on Clark & Madison. He takes a seat in the corner and awaits the arrival of his secret admirer. While he is waiting, he spots Ariel walking in and nonchalantly says hello to her. Ariel asks him “So, you’re at a coffee shop and you’re not drinking any coffee?” Jimmy replies “I actually hate coffee, I’m lactose intolerant. I’m meeting someone up here though.” Ariel asks shyly “Who are you meeting up with?” Jimmy replies “Well, I’m not 100% sure, but I got a letter at work from a secret admirer and I’m really hoping it’s Jennifer. We’ve been studying together a lot, and I’m really keeping my fingers crossed that I’ve finally won her over.” Ariel replies with a sad look on her face “Oh, well, I gotta get going, I’m late for work. Uhh, bye.” Jimmy waives goodbye to Ariel and keeps looking down at his watch to check the time.

Michael is leading a blindfolded Ashley by the hand through a dark room. Ashley says with her voice echoing “Michael Bailey, would you just tell me where we are. I’m afraid I’m going to run into something here.” Michael asks her “You trust me right?” Ashley replies “Of course I do.” Michael replies with a laugh “Then stop your complaining Ms. Reed.” Michael reaches his intended destination and turns on the lights. He tells Ashley to drop her blindfold and when she opens her eyes she shrieks with amazement. Ashley realizes that they are all by themselves in the Art Institute of Chicago. She sees an elegant table with two seats set up directly in front of her favorite painting. The table is surrounded with beautiful roses. Michael says “Happy Valentine’s Day Ms. Reed.” Ashley is in a state of shock and asks him “How did you make this happen?” Michael replies “I’m in a class with a guy who works nights here as a security guard. I helped him study for his last midterm, so he owed me one. “ Ashley replies “This is absolutely amazing Michael.” Michael replies while pulling out her chair “Have a seat Ash, I’ll get the waiter. Oh waiter….” Ashley and Michael sit down as Jimmy comes over dressed in a butler outfit. Jimmy “Welcome to the Art Institute Café, my name is James, I will be your waiter.” Ashley laughs and asks “So James, what are the specials?” Jimmy replies “I’m glad you asked my dear, we have a beautifully roasted chicken with delectable Yukon potates. This comes with a salad appetizer and a delicious chocolate brownie dessert.” Ashley replies “Hmmm, I don’t like any of that, got anything else?” Michael and Jimmy both look uneasy before Ashley bursts out laughing and says “I’m only kidding, that sounds delicious.” Michael and Ashley then continue on and have a wonderful meal with one another. After finishing, they stroll up right next to Ashley’s favorite painting and Ashley puts her arms around Michael and asks “How did I get so lucky? This is seriously the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.” Michael replies “I remember how much art used to mean to you Ash, and I know how much this painting in particular meant to you. I’m glad you like the evening I planned out.” Ashley replies “I don’t just like it Michael, I love it, and that’s not all I love.” Ashley and Michael share a nice kiss. Ashley tells Michael “Don’t pinch me Mr. Bailey, I don’t want to wake up and realize this was all a dream.” Michael playfully pinches Ashley “It’s real Ash, it’s all real.” At this moment, Ashley’s phone rings. She says to Michael “It’s probably my mom, I better answer it. You hold it right there though.” Ashley goes over to her phone and when she notices it is her Mom on the caller ID, she says to Michael “Just like I thought.” Ashley then answers and says “Hey mom….yeah, I’m just hanging out with Michael, wait till I tell you about where he took me tonight…… What’s wrong?......(long dramatic pause)…..what??? okay, I’ll be home right away.” Ashley has a shocked look on her face and says “You gotta take me home Michael, I have to go home.” Michael replies with a worried tone “What is it Ash, what’s wrong?” Ashley replies “We’ll talk about it later, for now, I really just need you to take me home. I’m so sorry.” Ashley begins to cry and Michael quickly consoles her by wrapping her in his arms “It’s okay Ash, it’s okay. Let’s get you home.” End credits.

Episode 15 "The Lovers Are Losing"
Michael and Jimmy are sitting in the breakroom at Kramllah. Jimmy is finishing up his story “I sat there at the coffee shop for three hours man, and no one showed up. I wonder if it was just some big practical joke being played on me.” Michael replies “You never know man, something just might have come up and they couldn’t make it.” Jimmy replies “Well all I can say is, I’m never getting my hopes up that high ever again. Those people at the coffee shop probably thought I was crazy or something, sitting there all by myself for three hours and I didn’t even order anything. How embarrassing.” Michael replies “I’m sure they didn’t even care. Don’t beat yourself up over this bro, you don’t have all the information yet.” Jimmy replies “I’ll try not to, but that is easier said than done. So how did things go with Ashley after I left? Honestly man, she looked like she was on cloud nine.” Michael replies “Everything was going really well, we were sitting on the bench by her favorite painting, and then her phone starts ringing and its her mom. Ashley answers and everything is fine at first, but then her mom told her something, and the best way I can describe Ashley’s face would be to say that it looked like she just saw a ghost. She got really freaked out and started shaking really bad. I asked her what was wrong and all she kept saying was that she needed me to take her home right now and that we’d talk about it later.” Jimmy replies “Oh wow man, so what did you do?” Michael answers “I consoled her as best as I could, and I took her home. Hopefully her and I get a chance to talk about this tonight.” Jimmy asks “Do you think this might have something to do with the secret?” Michael answers “I’m not sure man, I really have no idea, but I really hope I find out soon.”

Ashley is sitting in her living room with both of her parents. Her father is pacing back and forth while her mother is holding Ashley’s hand on the couch. Ashley mumbles through tears “how can this be mom?” Mrs. Reed replies “There’s lots of things in this world Ashley that happen that don’t make sense. All I can promise you is that you’re going to be alright. We’re not going to let anything happen to you.” Ashley replies “Mom, what are we going to do?” Mrs. Reed answers while embracing her daughter “I’m not sure honey, but I promise you that we’ll figure this out together.”

Professor Harper is busy grading papers at his desk when he hears a knock at the door. “Come in” he says and in walks Michael Bailey. “Mr. Bailey, what can I do for you?” Michael replies “Hi professor, I just had a few questions I wanted to go over with you about this week’s homework assignment.” Professor Harper replies “Not a problem, have a seat.” Michael and Professor Harper spend a few minutes going over a problem and Professor Harper quickly interjects “Michael, it seems like you are answering your own questions here, was there some other reason that you stopped in?” Michael replies “Yes, I guess there is another reason that I stopped in. The truth is, I don’t really have anyone that I can go to and ask for advice. I’ve only been living in Chicago for the last six months or so, and I really don’t know too many people just yet.” Professor Harper replies “This sounds like it could be serious Michael. Have you spoken with your parents yet?” Michael slowly replies “Both of my parents have passed away sir.” Professor Harper replies “I’m sorry to hear that son. I’d be more than happy to have a listen, and I’ll try to offer whatever advice I can.” Michael replies “Thanks professor, that means a lot to me.”

Jimmy is finishing up his shift at Kramllah. Jennifer Ward walks over to him and says “Nothing like another wonderful day of working at Kramllah right?” Jimmy replies “Yeah, blowing up hundreds of balloons a day is truly a dream come true. How has everything been up there at the register?” Jennifer replies “Oh, you know, same ole same ole. Ariel is learning everything pretty quickly though, she’s been pretty easy to train so far. Have you gotten a chance to talk to her much?” Jimmy answers “A little bit here and there. She seems like a nice girl.” Jennifer smiles “Well, between you and me, I think she has a crush on you.” Jimmy looks very surprised “On me? Why do you say that?” Jennifer replies “Well, she has been dropping hints to me here and there that she thinks you’re really cute, and she asked me if you have a girlfriend just the other day.” Jimmy stammers “And what did you tell her?” Jennifer replies with a smile “Well, I told her the truth, unless you’ve been hiding some girl away where no one can find her, I told her you’re available.” Jimmy laughs nervously and says “Of course, definitely, makes perfect sense that you would tell her that I’m single.” Jennifer replies “Well just make sure you do not tell her anything I just told you, she would be ultra mad at me. I think you should go for it though. She’s a really pretty girl, and she’s really sweet.” Jimmy replies “Well I will definitely give it some thought. Thanks for the heads up.” Jennifer replies “Not a problem, so I’ll see you this weekend for our usual study session?” Jimmy replies “Umm, of course, definitely.” Jennifer walks off and Jimmy is left standing by himself as it dawns on him that Ariel was his secret admirer. His face is filled with both surprise and disappointment as he now realizes that it wasn’t Jennifer who wrote him that letter. He mutters to himself “I think you should go for it. Man does this suck.”

Michael and Professor Harper are finishing up their conversation. Michael says “I really appreciate you taking time out of your day to talk with me.” Professor Harper replies “Michael, the door to my office is always open. You are one of the most promising students I have had in quite some time. If you ever need to chat about anything, you know where to find me. I hope things with Ms. Reed turn out for the best.” Michael replies “Thanks professor, I hope so too.” Michael and Professor Harper shake hands and Michael leaves the office, leaving Professor Harper with a concerned look on his face.

Ashley is laying on her bed when her mom knocks on the door and enters. Ashley wipes away her tears and her mom asks “have you told him yet?” Ashley replies “Not yet, I really don’t know what to say. I wish I would have just told him about this before we started dating. Mom, honestly, Michael is the most amazing guy I have ever met. He’s sweet, thoughtful, and sometimes I think he knows me better than I know myself. We were having such a great time last night and then you called me with that news, and it just felt like I got kicked really hard in the gut. I want to tell him, I just don’t know if I have the words to yet.” Mrs. Reed replies “I completely understand Ashley, we’ll figure this out hun, I promise.”

Michael arrives back at his apartment. He checks his phone to see if he has any voice messages and crashes on his bed. He sends Ashley a text asking her if she is alright. While he awaits the reply of her text, Michael falls asleep. He is awoken some time later by his phone ringing. He sees that it is Ashley and quickly answers it “Hello?” Ashley replies “Hey Michael, I’m sorry I haven’t gotten back to you yet. Things have just been really hectic. Do you have some time to talk?” Michael answers “Sure Ash, I just wanna make sure you’re ok.” Ashley answers “I’m doing ok, it was just a big shock getting that call from my mom. Look Michael, I want to tell you what’s going on, you really deserve to know, but I just can’t right now.” Michael replies “I understand Ash, just know that I’m here for you for whenever you need me.” Ashley replies “I know that Michael, and that’s what makes this next part so difficult.” Ashley begins sobbing on the other end of the line. Michael frantically says “Ashley, what’s wrong?” Ashley answers “I have to leave Michael, I’m leaving Chicago tomorrow morning, and I don’t know when or if I’ll be back. I didn’t want to go this time without saying goodbye.” Michael is in shock and says “Ashley, can you please tell me why you’re leaving? Please?!” Ashley replies sadly “I’m sorry Michael, I can’t. I have to go. Just know that I love you Michael Bailey, and I’ll be in touch soon. Goodbye.” Ashley hangs up and Michael is left in complete silence in his room. Just as he hangs up the phone, he is awoken by a buzzing sound coming from his phone. Ashley has responded to his initial text by saying “I’m doing okay. Can I come over and talk?” Michael looks at his phone and is relieved that it was only a dream. His relief turns to more concern as he begins to wonder what Ashley is going to tell him. He types back “Sure, I’ll see you soon.” Michael then sits on his bed and stares out the window at the beautiful moonlit Chicago skyline.

Episode 16 "Ignorance Is Bliss"
Michael hops onto a plane and takes a window seat in the back. The pilot begins speaking over the intercom “The skies are clear, should be a relatively quick flight to Charlotte. The flight attendants will now take you through the safety precautions.” Michael buckles his safety belt and starts to stare off blankly into the distance. He watches as the Chicago skyline vanishes off into the distance. He puts his hands on his head as a flashback to the night where he and Ashley talked about the major problem in her life begins.

Michael hears a knock at the door and opens it to find Ashley standing before him with an extremely nervous look on her face. She walks in and takes a seat on the couch. Michael sits down right next to her and places her hand in his. Michael says “Whatever it is that you want to talk about tonight, just know that I’m ready to hear it Ash, and no matter what, it isn’t going to have any effect on what the two of us have right now. It isn’t going to change anything between us. Please believe me when I say that.” Ashley is slow in responding before she finally replies with a nervous tone “Michael, I have wanted to tell you about all of this for the longest time. Every time I would make up my mind to, I would change it five minutes later. This is something that stayed with me every day of my life for the past four years. As time kept passing, I started to fear more and more that no explanation I could ever give you would be enough. I felt like there was nothing I could say to make you forgive me for disappearing on you the way I did. I was a coward. When both of your parents passed away, I hated myself for not reaching out to you, but at that point, I was really just afraid that seeing me would make things more difficult on you. I know it is backwards logic at best, but I was just really afraid of how you’d react. Then when you came back into my life, I just started feeling all the same emotions again, and I was even more ashamed that I couldn’t give you the peace of mind that you have deserved from me all of these years. I finally made up my mind to tell you, and was more ready than I have ever been to, but then you told me that it didn’t matter and that you wanted to be with me just the same. I took the easy way out and accepted that offer out of fear that if you did know, it wouldn’t be a good enough explanation and you’d decide that you want me out of your life for good. But then recently, on Valentine’s Day, I got some news from my mom that pretty much changes everything. I am extremely sorry and disappointed in myself that it has come down to this being the reason why I am finally telling you why I left. I only hope you can forgive me when this is all said and done. “

The flashback briefly ends as Michael’s plane lands and he gathers his belongings and gets off. He starts walking through the terminal when he sees a text message on his phone. The text is from Jimmy Cooper and says “I’m not too sure why you left so abruptly, just know that I’m here for you bro, feel free to call any time.” Michael ponders replying to the text message but continues on his journey. He walks outside and hails a taxi cab. He tells the taxi where he is heading, throws his belongings in the trunk, and hops in. Michael stares off as the taxi barrels down the highway, passing beautiful farms and pastures in the process. As Michael looks out the window, the flashback returns.

Michael begins to squeeze Ashley’s hand tighter as he notices a tear beginning to roll down her face. Michael gently wipes the tear away and tells Ashley “Nothing is going to change what we have Ash. No matter what you tell me, we’ll still be together, and that is all that matters to me.” Ashley looks off into the distance and tries to fight back the tears “I’m sorry for crying. There’s just a lot of emotion pent up from keeping this in for the past four years. I really have wanted to tell you, and I really did want to be there for you when your parents passed away, I was just selfish and scared, and I’m really sorry Michael.” Michael embraces her as Ashley tries to compose herself and after she finally does, she begins “Do you remember that boy I mentioned to you the summer we fell in love. The one who was really interested in me but I didn’t feel the same about him?” Michael thinks back before answering “yeah, I think I remember you mentioning a guy that was interested in you.” Ashley replies “well he wasn’t just interested, he was obsessed. His name was Jake, we had a few classes together and hung out a few times and then he started writing me really long letters about how he and I are meant to be together and how much he loved me, and honestly Michael, we never even so much as held hands. We were just friends, and he became infatuated with me. Right before the summer, it was getting ridiculous so I finally had to tell him that it had to stop or I’d have to tell my parents about it. That seemed to scare him off for a while, but then he started texting and calling me constantly saying he was sorry and that he’d never do it again. I told him that while I accepted his apology, I still didn’t want to talk to him anymore because he really did scare me. Also, I started finding out through people that he was getting involved with selling drugs and stealing cars and all this other absolutely terrible stuff, so I really started to get freaked out over him continuously texting and calling me. Right before my family went off to our summer home, I changed my phone number so he couldn’t contact me anymore. And then the best summer of my life happened. It was an escape from reality that I really needed at the time, and it was the most amazing time of my life spending that summer with you. When we said goodbye on that dock, there was no doubt in my mind that you would be the guy I would marry someday, and that we would find a way to make the distance work. By the time we got home, I just wanted to pick up the phone and call you to tell you how much I missed you already. That’s when everything changed.” Ashley pauses for a moment and begins to fight back tears once again. Michael holds her hand tighter and says “It’s okay Ash.” Ashley tries to compose herself as she continues “As soon as we pulled up to our house, we could tell that things weren’t quite right. We walked in and the place was completely trashed. Everything was destroyed. My parents started freaking out understandably and called the police while I ran to my room to see if my stuff was gone. When I got there, I almost fell to the ground. My room was a complete mess, everything thrown about. There was a message spray-painted on the wall that was my new phone number and underneath were the words “Looks like I can call you again” and then I saw a note stapled to the wall directly underneath it. It was all typed so we couldn’t trace the handwriting, but it was just awful the things that were said in it. Saying how angry he was that I changed my number and how he would make me pay if I ever did anything like that again. He said that no matter where I went, or what I did, he would be watching me. He said he would be checking my phone call logs to see who I was calling, and that I should be careful not to call people if I care about their well being at all. He said he knew some really powerful people and could make my life an absolute nightmare if I chose not to be with him. It went on and on about all of these threats, and then at the bottom of the letter was the worst one.” Ashley begins crying hard as Michael tries to console her “It’s okay Ash, I’m so sorry Ash, it’s okay.” Ashley battles through the tears to continue “It was a picture of you and I on the dock from that very summer. He must have come down there and taken it himself. Underneath the picture it said “If I ever see you with this guy again, I will kill him and make you watch.” Ashley begins erupting in tears as Michael continues to console her while internally becoming enraged. Ashley bellows “I was so scared Michael. The police told me that they had no evidence that it was him who wrote the letter or trashed our home so there was nothing they could do. I refused to go back to school and I just couldn’t stand living in that house anymore, so we moved to New York. I must have changed my number ten times Michael, and with every time, I’d receive threatening phone calls from him, but nothing could be proven cause he always dialed from pay phones. I don’t know how, but he eventually figured out our address in New York and started sending us more threatening letters about how we can run but we can’t hide. I got so freaked out again that I begged my parents to move. That’s how we ended up in Chicago. Finally, the phone calls and the letters stopped, and we eventually found out why. Two months before we moved to Chicago, Jake was arrested for selling drugs. He got sentenced to ten years. It felt like the biggest weight ever had been lifted from my shoulders. He terrorized me and my family for over two years. It was the absolute worst experience of my life. I wanted to call you Michael, every day. I was just so scared to, I didn’t want anything to happen to you because of me, and I didn’t know what else I could do. My parents became so secretive about our address and where we were living that they told me writing to you would be a bad idea because I wouldn’t be able to tell you how to write me back. I tried sending you e-mails but you must have changed your e-mail address because all of my messages came back with message send failures. After Jake got locked up, I heard about your father passing away. I was too much of a coward to call you though because I felt absolutely terrible about disappearing on you the way I did, especially with you dealing with such a tragedy in your family. Then when your mother passed a year later, I felt even worse. I wanted to call Michael, but I just couldn’t. I’m so sorry.” Michael takes Ashley’s hand and replies “I understand now why you didn’t call Ash, and I forgive you. It’s okay, I promise.” Ashley replies “It feels so great to hear you say that Michael. I only wish that this was the end of the story.” Ashley pauses for a while and stammers before continuing “When my mom called me on Valentine’s Day, it was to tell me that she heard from an old friend back home that Jake got an early release from jail for good behavior… Michael, I’m so scared that he’s going to find me and my family. I’m so scared Michael.“ Ashley begins crying uncontrollably again as Michael pulls her close and says “Nothing is going to happen to you Ash, I promise.”

The flashback ends as Michael is now getting out of the taxi. He grabs his belongings and walks up to his final destination. He puts a bouquet of flowers down on his parents’ grave, sits down on the grass and fights back tears as he says “I know it’s been a while since I came to visit you guys, there have just been so many things happening in my life. I really wish you were both here right now to help me through this. Whenever I needed any advice at all on anything, you both always knew exactly what to say. Well I need your help now. I need to know what to do. I’m thinking with anger in my heart right now, and I know that will only lead to bad things. I don’t know what to do though mom and dad, and I really could use some help.” The scene fades to black.

Episode 17 "How Much It Hurts"
Michael gets out of a taxi and arrives at his childhood home. He notices that the outside isn't being taken care of very well and that several newspapers are piled up on the driveway. He picks up all the newspapers and heads toward the front door. He pulls out his key and walks in, noticing that the place is a complete mess with beer bottles and pizza boxes scattered across the living room. He walks up the stairs and notices dirty laundry scattered across all of the stairs. He heads up to what used to be his parents' room and opens the door to find his Uncle Charlie (played by Jamie Walters) passed out face down on the bed with beer bottles and other various items strewn about the whole room. Cue musical intro and credits.
Jimmy Cooper is blowing up a relatively large Homer Simpson head balloon when Jennifer Ward walks over and comments with a laugh "And who exactly are you blowing that up for?" Jimmy points to an old lady in the corner of the store and says "Believe it or not, it's for that lady. She says her husband is a big fan." Jennifer replies "That is really strange. But hey, to switch topics for a sec, have you heard anything from Michael yet? It really isn't like him to just disappear without a trace. Pierre is super pissed, I really hope he doesn't lose his job over this." Jimmy replies "I've been texting and calling him, no response. Honestly, I'm really worried. And as for his shifts, I've been trying to cover as many of them as I can but it's hard since a lot of our shifts overlap." Jennifer replies "Well if there's anything I can do, just let me know, I'd be happy to fill in if I can. Michael is a great guy, whatever caused this must be pretty big."

Ashley is sitting in her room working on an assignment for Professor Harper's class when her phone buzzes. Her face has a look of anxiety as she goes to check on the text. She becomes relieved when she sees that it is from Michael and says "Things are going well over here. I'll be home soon, love you Ash. Don't worry about anything, please." Ashley closes her phone and has a pensive look on her face. Her mother knocks on the door and comes in with her mail. She drops it off and asks Ashley how she's doing. Ashley replies that she's doing well, and her mom gives her a kiss on the forehead before leaving. Ashley begins looking through the mail and becomes slightly concerned when she comes across a letter that looks to be written with familiar writing. Her hands begin shaking as she opens it up, but when she opens it, she quickly becomes relieved when she realizes it is just a credit card offer. She looks in the mirror and says "You gotta pull it together Ash. You can't be freaking out every time you get a piece of mail or a text message. The past will not define your future."

Michael is finishing up cleaning the living room when his Uncle Charlie finally heads downstairs and comments "Michael, I didn't know you were coming out to visit. I would have straightened up the place or something." Michael replies "No worries Uncle Charlie. It was kind of a spur of the moment thing. Shouldn't you be working today?" Uncle Charlie takes a seat down on the couch and replies "Yeah, I probably should be, but the foreman on my last job and I just didn't get along. He kept riding me and I had it, told him to take his job and stick it where the sun don't shine." Michael replies "And you're drinking again?" Uncle Charlie slowly answers "Ah, not that much really. I know it looks much worse than it is, but it really is just a temporary thing. I'll be back on the wagon in no time. Just gotta find me a new job working for some decent people and I'll be all set." Michael has a dejected and disappointed look on his face as he nods his head. Uncle Charlie replies "so how long are you gonna be around for? We should head out and go fishin' like old times." Michael replies "I'm actually only in for the night Uncle Charlie, I'll be heading out tomorrow." Uncle Charlie replies "Aw, now that's just a shame, but I guess the city boy has to run back to his important life. No time for small towns and small people anymore, you're far too educated for that kinda stuff." Michael replies in an angered tone "I have a lot of stuff going on right now, you really have no idea. I wish you would give me the benefit of the doubt for a change." Uncle Charlie replies "Oh, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, just a shame you won't do the same for me." Michael replies "You know, you'd be a much better uncle if you weren't such a drunken mess all the time. You treat my parents home, your own sister's home, like a trash can, and expect me to not have any problems at all with it? You promised mom on her deathbed that you'd never start drinking again, and look at you now. How dare you break that promise to her, how dare you!" Michael throws down the bag he was throwing garbage into and storms off.

Jimmy Cooper is sitting at the Kramllah breakroom when Pierre storms in and yells "Your break is over, get out there and start making some balloons!" Jimmy replies "But I've still got a half hour left on my..." Pierre interrupts "Out, out, out!" motioning Jimmy to get up and get back to work. Jimmy quickly jumps up and heads out the door towards the balloon station. A few moments later, Ariel walks over to him and asks him for some help with the price of a particular balloon that won't scan properly at the register. Jimmy helps her find the price right away and Ariel thanks him. When she leaves, she starts humming a Jack's Mannequin song as she's walking away. Jimmy yells out and says "Hey, is that "Dark Blue" you're humming?" Ariel replies with a shy smile "Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to be so loud." Jimmy replies "No, it's totally cool. I'm a really big Jack's Mannequin fan. That's actually one of my favorite songs from them." Ariel replies in an excited tone as she lets her guard down "Me too, it's been stuck in my head all day. Well I gotta get back to the register, but swing by later if you get through all your balloons, I'll bet we have some other favorite bands in common too." Jimmy replies "Definitely, sounds good." Ariel flashes a nervous smile and scurries back to the register as Jimmy watches on with a smile on his face. He forgets that he's filling a balloon and it explodes, making an extremely loud sound and breaking off into pieces everywhere. Everyone in the store looks at him as he waives it off saying "It's okay, nothing to see here folks, nothing to see." Ariel looks up and laughs as she continues ringing up a customer.

Michael wakes up, hops in the shower and heads downstairs to find his uncle sitting at the kitchen table. Michael pulls out a bowl and pours some cereal as his uncle reads the newspaper, both avoiding any conversation. Michael sits down and starts eating his cereal when his uncle finally breaks the silence "Where's the gun Michael?" Michael replies with surprise "What gun?" Uncle Charlie replies "your father's handgun, I noticed it wasn't there this morning in the safe when I woke up, where is it?" Michael replies with a defensive tone "I don't know what you're talking about, I haven't seen that thing in years." Uncle Charlie replies "You know exactly what I'm talking about, and I'm not sure what you're fixin' to do carryin' around a Magnum in your pocket but I suggest you think twice about it and hand it over to me right now." Michael replies hastily "Look, I don't know what you're talking about. You probably lost it or something, there's no way you could find anything in this place..." Uncle Charlie slams his hands down on the table and yells "Don't treat me like I'm a fool! I know you have the gun Michael, don't pretend otherwise! The real question is, what are you planning on doing with it?!" Michael replies, his voice starting to quiver "Listen, let's say I did have the gun. I don't plan on shooting anyone with it or anything. I just... I need to send a very clear message across to someone, and this is the best way I can think of." Uncle Charlie replies "Look Michael, things can escalate really quickly when you play a dangerous game like this. Just tell me what's going on and we can figure this out before you really mess up your life." Michael replies loudly "I don't think you're in any position right now to be giving me advice on how to avoid messing up my life!" Michael grabs his bag and begins walking towards the front door when Uncle Charlie yells out "You wanna hear me say I'm a loser? Fine, I'm a loser! I'm a failure! I've made mistakes my entire life, and I've done many things I regret. I regret letting my father die without telling him how much I loved him. I regret not spending nearly enough time with you when you were growing up, and I regret not being there for my own sister as she dealt with the death of her husband while at the same time being diagnosed with cancer herself. I have messed up my entire life Michael, and I regret it every day. I miss your mother more than words can express. She was the only person who loved me unconditionally and truly believed in the person I could be no matter how big of a screw-up drunk I was. And look at me now, I've gone and broken the one promise I made to her on her deathbed, and I am absolutely ashamed of myself for it. I wake up in the morning every day Michael, and I see regret. Don't make the same mistakes as me. You've got an amazing life ahead of you, a life you truly deserve. Don't do something stupid to ruin that. Give me the gun Michael, and if you don't want to do it for me, do it for your mom. Do it for her Michael." Michael's eyes begin welling up with tears. He opens the front zipper on his backpack and takes out the gun. He turns around and hands it over to his Uncle Charlie and begins openly weeping as his uncle embraces him. Michael says "I miss her so much Uncle Charlie, I miss her so much." Uncle Charlie continues embracing Michael as tears begin to well up in his eyes as he says "I do too Michael, I do too." End credits.

Episode 18 "All You Really Need Are a Few Good Friends"
Jimmy Cooper is blowing up balloons when he spots Michael walking into the store. Jimmy has a shocked and happy look on his face as he walks towards his friend. Jimmy says “I don’t know if I should hug you or be pissed at you. Where have you been man?” Michael gives Jimmy a handshake and pat on the back as he replies “My bad bro, I had to go back to Charlotte and take care of some family stuff. I promise I will never flake out like that on you again.” Jimmy replies “You better not. Don’t think you can go pulling an Ashley Reed on me. I’ll hunt you down and find you. Where else am I gonna get all my advice from?” Jimmy and Michael share a laugh as Michael replies “So fill me in on what I missed. Any updates with Jennifer?” Jimmy replies “Actually, not really. This past week with you gone, honestly, I’ve been getting a lot closer to Ariel. We’ve been taking breaks together and just goofing around with each other. We’ve got a lot of the same interests, we like the same bands, movies, tv shows. I dunno, I think there may be something there.” Michael replies “Well that’s awesome man. Maybe I should disappear more often. So what’s the gameplan?” Jimmy replies “Gameplan? I’ve got nothing. That’s what I need you for. I’m clueless when it comes to this kinda stuff, remember?” Michael replies “Well how about this, give me some time to think it over. I’ve gotta go square everything up with Pierre first. Head over tomorrow night, we can play some video games and map out our plan.” Jimmy replies “Sounds good, and good luck with Pierre, he has been ultra pissed about you disappearing.”

Michael knocks at Pierre’s door and Pierre yells out to come in. Upon seeing that it is Michael, Pierre says very calmly “Well, well, well, what do we have here? Michael Bailey, what brings you into my store today?” Michael replies “Well Pierre, first off, I wanted to apologize for missing work this past week. I know you’re probably really upset with me, but there’s a good explanation for it.” Pierre cuts him off “Upset? Upset you say? Hmmm, I suppose I was upset for the first couple of days, but I’m doing perfectly fine right now.” Michael questions “Really?” Pierre answers “Most certainly, it’s not very upsetting now because you’re fired.” Michael replies “But Pierre, you’re not even going to hear my side of the story?” Pierre answers “Nope, good luck in your future endeavors Mr. Bailey. Your services at Kramllah are no longer required.” Michael replies “Fine Pierre, I guess I won’t tell you about the new hair loss cream that is GUARANTEED to grow all of your hair back. I spent the last week at a conference learning all about it so I could report back to you as a surprise for being such a great boss.” Michael begins walking out the door when Pierre yells “Wait! Did I say fired? I meant hired. I’m so happy with your work, that I wish I could re-hire you every day. Now that we’ve cleared up that little misunderstanding, what’s this you say about a cream?”

Ashley Reed is lying in bed when she hears the doorbell ring. She gets up slowly and begins walking towards it with a slightly concerned look on her face. She peers through the peephole and becomes instantly relieved and excited when she realizes it’s Michael. She opens the door and Michael gives her a big hug and kiss. Ashley exclaims “Mr. Bailey, I cannot begin to tell you how much I missed you this past week. It just hasn’t been the same without you.” Michael replies “I missed you too Ms. Reed, and I know the feeling, but imagine it going on for four years…” Ashley playfully punches Michael and says “Very funny, so how did everything go with the family stuff you needed to take care of at home?” Michael ponders the question for a second and replies “Much better than expected. How have you been holding up Ash?” Ashley replies “I’m good, I don’t plan on living my life in fear Michael, I know I have nothing to worry about. How’s your Uncle Charlie doing by the way?” Michael answers “A lot better, I think he’s finally on the right track.” Ashley replies “Speaking of the right track, we have got lots of homework to catch up on, so you better be prepared for a long night Mr. Bailey.” Michael replies with a smile “Hopefully not too long, after a week away, I’d really prefer to be studying something other than engineering tonight.” Ashley playfully replies “We’ll see, maybe if you play your cards right.” Michael and Ashley playfully tap each other on the shoulder as they head off to study.

Jimmy and Michael are playing video games at Michael’s apartment. Michael asks Jimmy “So you’re sure about this with Ariel right? It wouldn’t be cool to play games with this girl and get her hopes up if you weren’t sure.” Jimmy replies “Yeah, I definitely know that, and I really do think I’m starting to like her. I mean, I’ll always have a thing for Jennifer, but I’ve gotta realize that it’s never gonna happen, it’s more of a fantasy than anything else. I wanna give things a shot with Ariel.” Michael replies “Alright, well then I’ve got a plan. You gotta do something interesting and unique. Don’t go for something lame like dinner and a movie. Every guy in the world does that kinda stuff. It’s gotta be a lot more thoughtful. You wanna make a good impression.” Jimmy replies “I’m all for that, what should I do?” Michael replies “I think I might have a really solid idea for a cool first date. Here’s the plan…”

Jimmy is putting away balloons at Kramllah when Ariel walks over and says hello. Jimmy replies back with his usual nervous energy “Oh hey Ariel, how’s it going?” Ariel replies shyly “Going good, just chuggin through another fun day here at Kramllah.” Jimmy replies “I hear ya on that. So hey, did you hear about The Format doing a one-night only reunion show here in Chicago?” Ariel replies “I totally did, but I heard tickets sold out in like three seconds, and I wasn’t able to get any. I’ve been kinda bummed about it since. They’re one of my favorite bands.” Jimmy replies “Well, I just so happen to have two tickets to go see them. Michael was gonna go with me, but he had to cancel cuz he’s trying to catch up with his school work after missing so much time. Would you maybe wanna go with me?” Ariel’s eyes widen as she replies “Seriously? I would love to go with you. Wow Jimmy, thank you so much. I can’t wait! I guess I’ll see you Friday night then! I gotta call my friends and tell them, they’re gonna hate me!” Ariel gives Jimmy a big hug and runs off.

Michael and Ashley are relaxing at Michael’s apartment. Ashley asks Michael “Wait a sec, I thought you were going to a concert with Jimmy tonight. What happened?” Michael replies “Well, we were gonna go see The Format, but then he told me about this new cashier at work that he’s got a crush on, so I told him to just take her instead.” Ashley replies “That’s super nice of you to do that. This girl better be worth it, Jimmy’s a great guy, he deserves a great girl. But hey, you’re friends with the lead guitarist Sam right? He’s a friend of your family. Won’t he be upset that you didn’t show?” Michael replies with a smile “Well now that you mention it Ms. Reed, got any plans this evening?” Ashley smiles and gives Michael a quizzical stare.

The Format is playing the song “She Doesn’t Get It” and everyone in the crowd is dancing and having a great time. Jimmy and Ariel are right near the front of the stage and are jumping up and down along with the music and both have huge smiles on their faces. The song finishes and the crowd is screaming. Ariel looks at Jimmy and says “Thank you sooo much for taking me to this concert. It has been absolutely amazing.” Jimmy smiles and replies “No problem, I’m glad you’re having a great time, so am I.” At this point, the lead guitarist Sam grabs a microphone and says “We’ve got one more song to play for you guys tonight, but I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for coming out. Who knows when we’ll all be together next, so let’s make some memories that will last forever. I need two volunteers for the next song, but you gotta know the words. We need some good background singers that know how to clap their hands and stomp their feet? Whose with me?” The crowd goes crazy with everyone starts jumping up and down. Sam looks around the audience before pointing directly at Ariel and Jimmy. They both start freaking out, and Sam says “Yes, you two, come on up here.” Jimmy and Ariel both have wide-eyed looks on their face as they climb on stage and slap high fives with Sam and the lead singer Nate. Ariel and Jimmy get positioned at a microphone stand to sing background. The lead singer Nate says “I think you’ll know this one” before signaling the band to start playing “The First Single (You Know Me)” Michael and Ashley are off to the side of the stage and Sam looks over at Michael and gives him a wink and a smile and Michael returns the gesture with a big thumbs up. Jimmy and Ariel are having a great time singing along on stage. As the song nears its close, Ariel turns to Jimmy and plants a big kiss on him. Jimmy’s eyes widen and the two have huge smiles on their faces as they give each other a big hug as the song ends. End credits.

19. April 22nd

Professor Harper is giving a lecture on control theory. He states “You’ve got a desired outcome that you want to be at. This is true in engineering, and this is true in life. How can you get there? What’s it going to take to get to where you need to be? In the world of engineering, there’s a thing we call the controller. It manipulates the inputs to obtain a desired effect on the output of the system. This is the reference, in life this is your goal. It’s all about how dynamic systems work, how we interact with the world around us, and to what extent we can control where our path is heading. As I’ve said to you all before, there’s not one topic in engineering that can’t be related to your life, and control theory is no different. That’s it for today’s session. There will be no Thursday session this week, so we’ll pick up where we left off next week.” Michael and Ashley gather up their books and head outside. Michael says “I can’t believe Professor Harper canceled class. He’s always at least twenty minutes early and absolutely loves what he’s doing. I wonder what the deal is.” Ashley replies “From what I’ve heard, he takes this specific day off every year but no one has ever been able to figure out why. There’s lots of crazy stories and guesses people have made over the years, but no one knows the reason for sure.” Michael replies “That’s so weird, I wonder if anyone has ever just asked him.” Ashley replies “Good question, I doubt anyone ever has. He seems like he’d be pretty unapproachable on any type of potential personal issues.” Michael nods his head and he and Ashley continue walking.

Jimmy Cooper and Jennifer Ward are working on a class assignment together at Jennifer’s house. Jennifer asks “Okay, so you’ve been holding out on me. How did things go with Ariel on Friday night?” Jimmy replies “They went really well, we got to go up on stage and everything. Michael set the whole thing up and he didn’t even let me in on it. He really is something else.” Jennifer replies “That’s all great, but I wanna hear all the juicy details! Sorry for being so nosy, but I’m a girl, I can’t help it! I’d ask Ariel, but I think she’s probably way too shy to tell me anything, so I’ve gotta get the news from you. It’s not every day that love is in the air at Kramllah.” Jimmy replies “Well there’s really no juicy details to give out. We had a really great time, and we will leave it at that Ms. Nosy.” Jimmy flashes Jennifer a smile and Jennifer replies “Fine, I guess I’ll have to get all the info from Ariel!” Jennifer and Jimmy both share a good laugh as they continue working on their homework.

There’s a knock at the door at Professor Harper’s office and Professor Harper replies “come in.” Michael walks in and asks Professor Harper if he has a second to talk. Professor Harper replies “Sure, what’s on your mind? Hopefully you haven’t been too busy playing catch-up for the week you missed.” Michael replies “I’ve gotten a lot of help from Ashley with that thankfully, so it hasn’t been too bad. I was actually stopping by not to talk about me, but actually to talk about you. There’s a lot of wild stories going around campus as to why you always take April 22nd off every year, and I’m wondering if you’re even aware of it and if you’d like a chance to set the records straight and put an end to all the crazy stories going around.” Professor Harper turns to Michael and replies “I’m aware of the stories Michael, people will always search for the answer that cannot be found. I don’t mind the tales that are out there floating around. I know the true reason, and that’s more than sufficient enough for me.” Michael replies “But wouldn’t you rather just set everyone straight and end the discussion. I’m sure people are making a much bigger deal out if it than they should be, don’t you think it’s best just to squash the rumors?” Professor Harper pauses before replying “Mr. Bailey, you are always welcome in my office if it relates to school work, or even in some cases, personal issues that you may be having. When it comes to issues that are personal to me though, that type of subject matter is off limits. So if you don’t have anything else to discuss with me, you really should be on your way, I have lots of work to get through.” Michael nods his head slowly before getting up and leaving without saying a word as Professor Harper keeps working on the paperwork at his desk.

Michael is putting away boxes at Kramllah when Jimmy approaches him and asks “Hey Michael, I know I’ve thanked you like ten times already, but I just wanna let you know again how much I appreciated what you did for me the other night. Ariel had such an amazing time, and it really is all thanks to you.” Michael replies “I think it has more to do with you, that girl really likes you man. Are you thinking of making this official?” Jimmy replies with a quizzical look “What do you mean by official?” Michael answers “Well, you know, do the whole girlfriend/boyfriend facebook status change thing.” Jimmy asks “Is that what constitutes a relationship nowadays?” Michael answers “Pretty much, it’s a sad world we live in, I know.” Jimmy replies “Well honestly, I do think we’d be really good together. I just have no idea how to go about asking a girl to be my girlfriend. I’ve never had a girlfriend. I mean, do you just ask them, hey do you wanna be my girlfriend?” Michael replies “Not exactly man, for the most part, words don’t seal the deal on the formation of a relationship. There’s gonna be a moment that you two share, and maybe it’ll be punctuated by a long kiss, maybe it won’t, but at that point, you’ll both know it, and words won’t even matter at that point, it’s a magical moment my friend.” Jimmy replies “Is that how it was with Ashley when you guys started dating again?” Michael pauses before replying “Honestly, if you find the right girl, it’s like that every time you see her, hear her voice, or even think of her. There’s nothing in the world that beats that feeling, once you’re lucky enough to feel it, you’ll know what I’m saying.”

Michael and Ashley are relaxing watching some television together and Ashley notices that Michael is preoccupied and asks “What’s wrong hun?” Michael replies “Well I tried talking to Professor Harper about why he cancels class on April 22nd every year, I figured I’d give him the chance to just set the record straight and put an end to the rumors, and he basically shut down completely and told me to leave. It was really surprising, especially since I feel like he and I have built up a solid relationship over the course of the year. I’ve gone to him so many times for advice, school related or non-school related, and he’s always been a beacon of consistency for me who has opened my eyes up to things I wouldn’t have seen on my own. I just thought that he’d let me in, kinda makes me feel like maybe I’m no different to him than any of his other students.” Ashley grabs hold of Michael’s hand and replies “Don’t feel that way Michael, it’s just his defense mechanism. I’m sure he’s so used to shutting people out that it comes as second nature to him. If it really means a lot to you, confront him one more time about it, and tell him how you’re feeling. Don’t take no for an answer, because I’m sure in a lot of ways, he needs you just as much as you need him.” Michael nods his head and thinks about what Ashley just said.

Jimmy and Ariel are walking together on North Avenue beach peering off onto Lake Michigan. Jimmy replies “I had no idea this beach was within walking distance of Kramllah.” Ariel replies with a playful laugh while looking at Jimmy’s pasty white skin “Why am I not surprised?” Jimmy and Ariel take a seat at a bench on the beach and look off into the distance as the sun starts to set over the ocean. Ariel places her head on Jimmy’s shoulder and Jimmy starts to feel the moment Michael was describing earlier. Ariel opens up the palms of her hands onto Jimmy’s lap and he places his hands in hers as the two stare silently off into the distance at the setting sun.

Michael knocks on Professor Harper’s door once more. Professor Harper yells to come in and Michael finds Professor Harper moving quickly around his office putting things away and preparing to leave. Professor Harper asks “Mr. Bailey, I’ve got only a few minutes, what do you need?” Michael replies “Look, I know whatever the reason you cancel class is your personal business and you don’t have to explain it to any student on this campus. Honestly though, if you just think of me as another student, that really hurts Professor. I can count the people I’ve told in Chicago about my past on one hand, I’ve opened up to you over the past 8 months, and you’ve helped me in ways I cannot thank you enough for, and I feel like I finally have a chance to pay you back for all that advice and be there for you in a time of need, and you’re just unwilling to give me that chance. It’s not easy for me to tell people about how both of my parents passed away within a year of each other, I don’t enjoy doing it, but I feel like it’s the right thing to do if I ever wanna truly let someone in. All that I’m asking for Professor is that you let me in, and show me that this bond we’ve formed is stronger than the average student-teacher bond, and more importantly, give me a chance to be there for you the way you’ve been there for me.” Professor Harper pauses for a good amount of time before saying “Alright Mr. Bailey, follow me.”

Michael follows silently behind Professor Harper who leads Michael to his car. They both hop in and drive silently for over an hour until Professor Harper finally reaches a cemetery and pulls over. Professor Harper grabs flowers from the back of his trunk and a red fire truck and begins walking towards a gravesite as Michael follows quietly behind. Professor Harper reaches his destination. The tombstone reads “Christine Harper January 16th, 1960- April 22nd, 1990 and Evan Harper March 23rd, 1988- April 22nd, 1990. A tear begins to fall down Michael’s face as Professor Harper breaks the silence “I was gonna get to it Saturday morning, first thing. I just had some papers to grade and some lesson plans to write, but first thing Saturday morning, I was gonna head up to the dealership and have them check out the brakes on my car. Money always seemed to be tight, we’d put off fixing things for as long as we could. I was just starting out as a professor and was drowning in student loans. After we had Evan, Christine quit her job as a nurse because she couldn’t stand the thought of having to leave him with a stranger. That’s when we had to drop down to one car because we couldn’t afford to pay the insurance on a second one. I was at a parent teacher conference that Friday night that ended around 7PM. When it finished up, I looked outside but I didn’t see Christine so I called the home phone.” Professor Harper is fighting back tears, and Michael has tears falling rapidly down his face. “She said she was running late and hadn’t gotten the chance to leave yet but was just about to head out the door. I told her to get here as quick as she could because I was really tired and wanted to get home as soon as possible. She apologized for being behind schedule, and told me how much she loved me. I rushed my way off the phone and I honestly can’t even remember if I told her that I loved her back. Well that was the last time I ever heard her voice.” Professor Harper pauses once again as more tears begin to stream down his face. He continues with a tremble in his voice “She was doing 50 heading up to a stoplight, and the light turned yellow, she went to hit the brakes but they failed completely and she was hit head on by a Semi that was clearing the intersection making a left turn.” Professor Harper bursts into tears and tries to continue “She was rushing because of me, and on that day, I lost the two loves of my life, I lost my entire world. On that day, Thomas Harper died, and I’ve been a shell of the man I once was ever since. I come to this gravesite every year on the day before the anniversary of their deaths, because on April 21, 1990, my world hadn’t ended yet. I don’t work on April 22nd because I know there’s no way I’d make it through the day without breaking down completely. Twenty years later and it still breaks my heart every time I think of what happened on April 22nd. I bring these Poinsettias for my wife because they were her absolute favorite. Her garden was filled with them, vibrant and beautiful, just like she was.” Professor Harper really starts to break down at this point but attempts to continue “And for my son, he was the most amazing little guy. We couldn’t afford to buy him nearly as many toys as we wanted to, so he only had a few, but he never complained or asked for more. He had a little red fire truck that was his absolute favorite; he played with it so much that the little plastic wheels were almost completely worn down. Buying these fire trucks every year brings back the memory of the glowing look on his face when I gave him that first one, and for one split second, I can feel like he’s here with me again.” Michael has tears streaming down his face and Professor Harper breaks down crying at this point. Michael taps Professor Harper on the shoulder and opens his arms, and the two share a heartfelt embrace. No further words are spoken as the scene fades to black and the credits start to roll.

20. What Goes Around Comes Around

Jimmy Cooper drives up to Michael’s apartment as Michael comes down dressed in his Kramllah attire. As soon as Michael hops in, he extends his hand out to Jimmy and says “Congratulations my friend.” Jimmy shakes Michael’s hand and says “You saw it on facebook I’m guessing?” Michael nods his head and smiles before saying “So how did it happen man? Hit me up with all the details.” Jimmy replies with a smile “Well it was actually just like you said man. We were down by North Avenue beach watching the sunset on Lake Michigan and it was just one of those amazing moments where two people know exactly what the other is thinking without saying a word. It was amazing man.” Michael smiles and replies “That’s awesome to hear, you deserve this man, don’t ever think differently.” Jimmy replies “Thanks Michael, I couldn’t have done it without you.” Michael answers “Well I disagree with you there, but I’m glad to have helped in any way. Too bad we’ve got a long day of work ahead of us, nothing like spending an entire Saturday at Kramllah.” Jimmy replies “I can’t think of any better way to kill a weekend.” Michael and Jimmy share a laugh as they continue on the road to Kramllah. As the store comes within view, Michael and Jimmy notice several police squad cars outside the store. Jimmy and Michael also notice that the front door is smashed open and quickly hop out of Jimmy’s car and head inside.

Michael and Jimmy walk into the store and notice Pierre talking with the police officers. Pierre is visibly upset and looks to be on the verge of a breakdown. Jennifer Ward walks up to Jimmy and Michael and begins to tell them the story of what happened. Jennifer starts “Well I guess Pierre got in early this morning and saw that the front door was smashed in. He immediately called the police before heading in because I guess he was worried the thieves might still be in the building. After the police came and assured him that no one was in the store, Pierre went in with the officers to identify all the things that were missing. Well as you can tell, they took both of the cashier computers and monitors, but that’s just a drop in the bucket compared to what they took from the safe. I closed the safe down last night and there was close to $17,000 in there. When Pierre went into the cash office this morning, the safe was broken into and all the cash was gone.” Michael replies “Oh wow, that is absolutely terrible, no wonder he’s over there completely freaking out.” Jimmy asks “But he has insurance right? Insurance should cover this kind of thing right?” Michael replies “At best, it will cover the equipment stolen, and he’ll probably get a fraction of the cost. As far as the cash that’s gone, its almost impossible to prove how much was taken, so I doubt he’ll be able to get any of that back from insurance.” Jimmy replies “Well that totally sucks. I’m not the biggest fan of Pierre’s, but I feel pretty bad for him right now.” Michael replies “I gotta agree with you there.”

Michael, Jimmy and Jennifer start cleaning the glass up by the front door as the police officers begin filing out of the store. A visibly shaken Pierre pages everyone over the intercom “Please everyone, come up front to what used to be the front registers.” All of the associates come up front and a dejected Pierre begins “As you may have heard and seen, the store was broken into last night, the registers were stolen, but more importantly, there was a large sum of money taken out of the safe. Unfortunately, it looks like the insurance policy I have will only cover the broken door and the stolen registers, and as a result, I will not have enough to cover the monthly rental payment for the store. As of right now, I’ve decided to close Kramllah and head back to my hometown in France. I plan on selling back the remaining inventory to the suppliers and will use that money to pay your final paychecks. I’m sorry for the bad news, and I appreciate the work you’ve all done for me over the years. I wish there was another way, but without that money, I have no chance of keeping this store running. If you want to stay and help clean up, you’re free to, if not, you can stop by later in the week for your last check.” Pierre ends the meeting and walks back towards his office. Jimmy looks to Michael and Jennifer and says “Wow, what a day.” Jennifer replies “Poor Pierre.” Michael shakes his head and says “I know I’ve only been working here for eight months, but I can’t imagine this store closing and all of us not getting to work with each other anymore.” Jennifer replies “I know what you mean Michael, this is depressing.”

Michael and Ashley are sitting together on campus and Ashley is helping Michael look through the classified ads. Ashley says “I can’t believe the store got broken into like that, I know he’s a jerk 99.9% of the time, but I really do feel bad for your boss Pierre.” Michael replies “I do too Ash, I wish there was something I could do, but Pierre needs to recoup pretty much all of that money to keep the store in business. I guess he fell a bit behind on the mortgage payments and was saving up the cash in the safe to pay it off in one big chunk. The guy doesn’t believe in banks I guess. Man did it backfire.” Ashley answers “Well isn’t there something we could try to do?” Michael replies “I’ve given it a lot of thought Ash, I don’t know how we can pull together $17,000 in two weeks time. I wish we could, but I just don’t see how it’s possible.” Ashley ponders for a second before replying “What about a fundraiser event. We can set up ads all around town telling the story of what happened and how we need to save the store. You know, throw a big bash at Kramllah and charge $20 a person.” Michael’s eyes widen and he replies “Well I think that’s an awesome idea Ash.” Ashley replies “Alright, let’s get started on this right now then. We’ve got a lot of work to do.” Michael replies “Let me call Jimmy, he can round up Jennifer and Ariel and we can have some backup with this.”

Pierre is sitting in his office when Michael comes in and asks him how he’s doing. Pierre is extremely dejected and pauses from packing up his items to reply “This has been the worst week of my life. How does it look like I’m doing?” Michael answers “That’s completely understandable Pierre, but what if we came up with a way to get the money back.” Pierre replies “That’s impossible Michael, where am I going to get $17,000 dollars from?” Michael replies “Well, we’ve come up with a plan, we’ve kinda drawn it out all out here on this advertisement.” Pierre looks it over and says “Well I doubt it will work, but what do we have to lose?”

A montage shows of Michael, Ashley, Ariel, Jimmy & Jennifer putting up ads all around town, talking to people about what happened at Kramllah.

Michael, Ashley, Ariel, Jimmy and Jennifer finish putting the final touches on the store which is decorated and looks absolutely amazing. Pierre comes in and is taken a back by all the work everyone did to put the fundraising event together. Pierre gets slightly choked up and says “This is a bit much to take in. This means a lot to me, and no matter the result tonight, I’ll always remember you kids doing this for me.” Everyone gives Pierre a hug and Michael states “Alright, let’s get these doors opened so we can save the store.” Jimmy Cooper opens up the front door and people begin streaming in, passing their entry fee onto Jimmy as they enter the store. A live band begins playing and people start dancing and having a good time. A slow song starts and Ashley finds Michael and asks for a dance. Michael replies “That would be lovely Ms. Reed.” Michael and Ashley start dancing and Michael says “This was a great idea Ash, whether we hit our goal or not, it was an amazing effort.” Ashley replies “You did pretty well yourself Mr. Bailey, lining up the band to play and getting all those stores to donate all that food, you really came through.” Michael replies “Well I really hope it works out. Deep down, Pierre is a good guy, and I’d hate to see him lose his dream of owning his own store because of some thieves taking that away from him.” Michael and Ashley are interrupted by Jimmy Cooper who says “Guys, I just counted up all of the cash we brought in at the door. We’ve got a little over $12,000 so far, we’ve done really well but I don’t think we’re gonna be able to make it.” Michael replies “Well at least we gave it a shot Jimmy.” At this moment, Professor Harper walks in and says “You kids gave it more than a shot, this was really great what you did to save a local business. How much does the store need to stay open Michael?” Michael is surprised by Professor Harper’s entrance and says “We need $17,000 professor.” Professor Harper pulls out his checkbook and writes a check for $5,000 and hands it to Michael. Michael gives Professor Harper a big hug and Michael races to the stage to give the news to the crowd. Michael states “Hey everyone, we’ll get right back to the music, but I just wanted to pull Pierre up here, Pierre, where are you at?” Pierre heads up to the stage and stands next to Michael. Michael addresses the crowd “Thanks to the generosity of all of you, I’d like to present you Pierre with the total that we raised from this fundraiser. The numbers are in, and we were able to hit our goal of $17,000! Kramllah isn’t going anywhere!” The crowd erupts and Pierre gets extremely emotional as he accepts the envelope from Michael. He addresses the crowd and says “Thank you all for everything you’ve done. I came to America with very little, and today, I feel like the richest man on the planet.” The crowd erupts once more and the band begins to play. Pierre gives Michael a huge embrace and thanks him once more as the scene fades to black.

21. Mother’s Day

Michael and Jimmy are unloading some boxes from the newest shipment of greeting cards. Jimmy says to Michael “It feels really great to have helped Pierre keep the store open. How much longer do you think he’ll stay in nice Pierre mode before going back to his usual arrogant self?” Just as Jimmy says this, Pierre walks by and yells “Jamie, stop dragging those boxes on my beautifully buffed floor. What are you, some kind of idiot?” Pierre walks away and Jimmy replies “Looks like that answers my question.” Michael asks Jimmy “So, how are the prom preparations going?” Jimmy replies “Well we’ve still got some time to plan for it. We decided to go to my school’s prom only and not hers because she really doesn’t care for too many of the people at her school.” Michael replies “Well I think you two will have an amazing time.” Jimmy asks Michael “So how are things going with you, semester winding down, must feel pretty good to be finishing up your first full year at UC?” Michael replies “Yeah, it’s definitely been an amazing experience so far. Finals are coming up soon so I’ll be cramming majorly.” Jimmy replies “Yeah right, you know you’re gonna do fine. You’re the smartest guy I know.” Michael and Jimmy begin to open the new boxes and soon realize that the new shipment is for the upcoming Mother’s Day holiday. Michael pauses before grabbing for the cards to stock the shelves and Jimmy notices and says “hey man, I can stock these, just take a break or something bro and we’ll work on the next box.” Michael nods his head and heads to the break room.

Jimmy is putting the greeting cards away when Jennifer approaches him. Jennifer says “Hey Jimmy, first things first, just wanted to let you know that because of all your help, I pulled off an A on that physics final. You saved my life pretty much, so thanks a ton. Second, I wanted to ask you if you and Ariel had a group to go with for prom?” Jimmy replies “Well, first things first, no need to thank me on the physics front, you took that test all by yourself, and I’m proud of you. And secondly, umm, I’ll have to talk with Ariel about it, I’m not sure about what her preferences are…” Jennifer interrupts “Well I actually just texted her about it, and she said she’d love to be with my group, so if it’s cool with you, I’d love to have you two join our group.” Jimmy is hesitant and replies “Well, I just don’t know…” Jennifer interrupts again “Look, if you’re worried about Taylor, I already talked it over with him, and he’s fine with it. I promise, there will be no issues, okay?” Jimmy replies “Alright, sounds good, so are we gonna just meet you guys there?” Jennifer replies “No silly, we’re getting a big party bus. We’ll pick you guys up, but we’ll talk more about it later, I gotta get back to the register before Pierre realizes I’ve been gone.” At this same moment, an angry Pierre pages over the intercom “Jennifer, to register thirteen, Now!” Jennifer looks at Jimmy and says “Too late I guess. I’ll talk to you later” before running back up front.

Michael and Ashley are sitting in Professor Harper’s class. Professor Harper is going over what’s going to be on the final and is just wrapping things up. He dismisses the class, and Michael tells Ashley he’ll see her outside in a minute. Michael approaches Professor Harper and says “I just wanted to thank you again for making that donation to Pierre’s store. You definitely didn’t need to do that, but I really do appreciate it.” Professor Harper replies “Mr. Bailey, just consider it my way of saying thank you.” Michael is confused and asks “Thank you? What are you thanking me for?” Professor Harper replies “For as difficult as it was to deal with the loss of my wife and son, it’s been even more difficult keeping all my emotions inside all these years. You were there for me in ways that even my closest friends and family members haven’t been able to, and for that, I will always be grateful.” Michael shakes Professor Harper’s hand and says “Well thank you for everything as well. You’ve definitely been way more than just a professor to me over the course of these last nine months. The way the past year has been for me, coming to a new city where I didn’t know anybody at all, you’ve really helped guide me along the way, and I will always be grateful for that. I gotta say though, for every test we’ve had this year, you’ve basically scared the crap out of us beforehand. Why didn’t you give us all the “be scared out of your mind because this final will be ridiculous” speech?” Professor Harper smiles and says “I guess I just didn’t have it in me today. Hopefully everyone still realizes that it’s gonna be a ridiculously hard test even without the speech, and if not Mr. Bailey, you better start spreading the word.” Michael and Professor Harper share a laugh as they say their farewells and part ways.

Michael is in his living room studying with the news channel playing on the TV in the background. The news anchor begins a piece on it being Mother’s Day and Michael quickly turns the tv off. The door buzzer rings and Michael gets up and says “I’ll be right down.” He heads downstairs and finds Ashley waiting for him. She asks him “Are you sure you’re okay with joining us for this?” Michael replies “It’s just lunch with your fam Ash, it’s no big deal.” Ashley replies “I know it’s gonna be extra hard for you this year Michael, and I’d understand if you didn’t want to go out with my family for Mother’s Day this year.” Michael replies “Ash, it’s fine, believe me. I’ll be fine.” Ashley and Michael drive up to a restaurant where they meet with Ashley’s brothers and Ashley’s parents. Mrs. Reed says “I’m so glad you boys were able to make it. How were your flights?” Ashley’s brother Jeff replies “The flights were fine. And of course we made it mom, no way we were gonna miss seeing you on Mother’s Day.” Ashley’s brothers and Ashley’s parents are laughing and having a good time while Ashley is attempting to mask her happiness out of understanding for Michael’s situation. Michael looks around the restaurant and notices that everyone there is celebrating Mother’s Day with their mom, most of the mothers having flowers or some other nice gifts at the table, and the happy faces are starting to take its toll on Michael. Nonetheless, he battles through the dinner and thanks The Reed’s for the invite before leaving with Ashley. When Ashley and Michael return back to Michael’s apartment, Michael tells her “I think I’m gonna call it an early night Ash.” Ashley replies “I understand, I’ll call you tomorrow morning babe. I love you Michael Bailey.” Michael replies “I love you too Ashley Reed.” Michael and Ashley share a goodnight kiss and Michael heads up to his apartment. Ashley watches as Michael heads upstairs and then slowly drives off. As she’s driving along, she gets a text message notification, and opens her phone to read the message. As she reads the message, she gasps with fear and loses control of her car as a result. She slams head-first into a traffic light pole and the airbags in her car activate and slam into her face.

Michael pulls a photo album from under his bed and opens it up to a photo of him and his mother from last year’s Mother’s Day, just before she passed away. The scene morphs into a flashback and Michael is with his mother, attempting to take a picture of the two. Michael pulls out a card that says Happy Mother’s Day and says to his mother “You’re the best mom in the world, I love you so much.” Mrs. Bailey pulls Michael close and says “I’m far from it Michael, but I can tell you one thing, you are definitely the best son a mother could ask for.” Michael smiles and tells his mother “Well you just wait mom, we’re gonna have an amazing time in Chicago together, we’re gonna see every inch of that city.” Mrs. Bailey smiles and replies “It’s going to be wonderful Michael, I can’t wait.” Michael replies “Which brings me to your gift. I know we’re a few months away from moving out there, but I wanted to get you into the spirit of Chicago, so, to get you ready for the trip, I brought you some brand new luggage.” Michael pulls out from the closet beautiful floral luggage and his mother starts to cry. Michael tells her “Mom, there’s no reason to cry. Those old suitcases of yours needed to be put out of their misery. These new ones will do the trick just fine, I promise.” Mrs. Bailey tries to shake off the tears but is unable to. She looks to Michael and says “The luggage is absolutely beautiful Michael, but that’s not why I’m crying right now. Sit down with me son.” Michael sits down by his mother’s side and takes her hand. Mrs. Bailey continues “I met with my doctors today Michael. And the news isn’t good.” Michael replies frantically “What is it mom, whatever it is, we can tackle it head on, we’ll fight it mom, we can beat anything thrown our way.” Mrs. Bailey grabs on tight to her son’s hands “Michael, you know I’ll never stop fighting, and I’ll never give up... The doctors told me today that my body isn’t responding to the chemotherapy, and that the cancer is still spreading. They said there is nothing more they can do Michael.” Michael doesn’t want to believe this and replies “This doesn’t change anything mom, we’re gonna fight this and you’re gonna be ok. You’re gonna be ok mom. We’ll go see another doctor and get a second opinion. There’s gotta be something we can do to fight this.” Mrs. Bailey replies “Michael, I’m tired, I don’t wanna see any more doctors. These past two years, all I’ve done is see doctors, first with your father, and now with me. Michael, I don’t have the time for doctors anymore, I just wanna spend the time I have left with the people I love. Can you do me a favor Michael and take me for a ride? I wanna show you something.” Michael is fighting back tears and replies “But the doctors said you shouldn’t be…” Mrs. Bailey interrupts and says “Please son, I don’t care what the doctors say anymore. Let’s go for a ride.” Michael reluctantly gives in and helps his mother to the car. She instructs Michael to drive to a park in the middle of nowhere. They get out of the car and Michael helps walk her over to a park bench. Mrs. Bailey says “This is where your father and I met Michael. This used to be the busiest park in the county. He had just finished playing a game of softball with his friends when he spotted me sitting by myself waiting for a bus ride home. He pulled up next to me and asked why I was sitting all by myself. I told him I was waiting for a bus and offered me a ride. He was cute, and things were definitely different back in those days, so I accepted the offer. We got to talking during the car ride back and he just seemed like the sweetest guy I’d ever met. He finally worked up the courage to ask me on a date right before we got to my house, and I happily accepted. As crazy as it sounds, I knew that very moment that he was the one for me Michael. One car ride was all it took. Coming back here brings back some amazing memories son.” Michael replies “That’s a beautiful story mom.” Mrs. Bailey replies “The point is son, when you find that person who you just can’t live without, you know it. It may be something as short as a car ride, but when you find the person you know you’re going to spend the rest of your life with, deep down, you know it. I know that person for you Michael is Ashley, and I know she broke your heart and disappeared without any warning, but promise me one thing son. If your paths ever cross again, forgive her, for me.” Michael replies “But mom, we don’t even know why she left. How can I promise to forgive her without knowing the reason?” Mrs. Bailey interrupts “Just do it for me Michael, please, just forgive her.” Michael is hesitant and replies “Alright mom, I doubt I’ll ever see her again, but if I do, I promise, I’ll forgive her, but only for you.” Mrs. Bailey replies “That’s all I ask son.” Mrs. Bailey pauses before continuing “Just know this son, if I do pass, I lived an amazing life. I fell in love and married the most amazing man, and got to have the most amazing son. I had the chance to watch you grow up to be the gifted and talented man I see before me today. I love you with all of my heart Michael, and no matter what, I’ll always be with you.” Michael replies fighting back tears “I love you too mom, I love you too.” Michael and his mother begin crying as they share a long embrace on the park bench as the scene fades to black.

22. Out of My Hands

Ashley is lying on a hospital bed hooked up to an IV with her eyes closed. Her head is bandaged and bruised and she finally wakes up and sees her parents and Michael sitting nearby. Michael jumps up and runs over to her “Ash, Ash can you hear me?” Ashley groggily replies “Michael? Where are we?” Michael replies “Ash, you were in a car accident. You lost control of your car and slammed into a light pole. A few bruises and some scratches, nothing to worry about, you’re gonna be fine.” Ashley begins to realize her surroundings and starts to jostle about “What? An accident? I don’t remember any accident Michael” she says frantically. Ashley’s mother rushes over and says “Ashley, its ok, the doctors said you might have temporary memory loss when you came to, and that you might not remember the moments right before the accident. It’s completely normal dear, nothing to be concerned with.” Ashley starts to calm down slightly and then asks “Oh my gosh, all I remember was dropping Michael off at home after dinner. Everything after that is a complete blank? So I just hit a light pole, no other people were involved in the crash?” Michael replies “Nope, just a light pole Ash. I do have one bit of bad news for you though. Your phone got crunched from the impact from the airbags, your LCD screen is completely cracked. We’ll have to get you a new one.” Mr. Reed steps in and says “I really hope you weren’t texting when this accident happened Ashley. That would be extremely irresponsible.” Mrs. Reed steps in and cuts off her husband “For goodness sake Daniel, leave the poor girl alone for now, she’s been through enough, and we have no idea what caused the accident. Let’s give Ashley and Michael some time to sit and relax together. We’ll be downstairs in the cafeteria honey, don’t you worry about anything.” Mrs. Reed grabs Mr. Reed by the arm and takes him out of the room, leaving Michael and Ashley alone. Michael grabs Ashley’s hand and says sweetly “We’re gonna have to revoke that license of yours Ms. Reed. You my dear, are accident prone.” Ashley replies “I have no idea how this could have happened Michael, I’ve never been in an accident before, I’m a good driver. Gosh, my dad seems so pissed right now.” Michael replies “I’m sure it was nothing more than you seeing a rabbit or some other animal and being the sweet girl you are, you tried to avoid hitting it and slammed into a light pole. Next time, just remember it’s either Bugs Bunny or you.” Ashley smiles and replies “You always know how to make me feel better Michael, even in the strangest of situations.” Michael gives Ashley a kiss on the forehead and says “That’s what I’m here for Ms. Reed. Now you just get some rest. You’ll be out of here in no time.”

Michael is unloading boxes at Kramllah when Jimmy walks over and asks in a concerned tone “Hey Michael, how’s Ashley doing?” Michael replies “She’s doing much better, thanks. They’re gonna keep her for another night or two just to make sure she doesn’t have any lingering effects from the crash. They wanna run a few more tests, but it looks like she’s gonna be back to normal in no time.” Jimmy replies “well that’s definitely a relief man. I’m really glad to hear she’s gonna be ok.” Michael replies “Me too man, when I got the call from her folks that she had been in an accident and was at the hospital, I was a mess bro. I can’t tell you how good it felt to see her finally come to.” Jimmy replies “I can imagine man, I would have been a wreck too.” Michael replies “Well it’s all good now man, so no worries. How’s the last minute prom preparation going by the way, what is it, two days away?” Jimmy replies “Um, yeah, about that, there’s some stuff I’ve been meaning to talk to you about.” Michael replies “Alright, hit me with it man.” Jimmy continues “Well, first thing, apparently Jennifer and Ariel decided it would be best if we went with Jennifer’s group, so now I’ll be stuck on a party bus with pretty much every kid who has ever given me a swirly within the past ten years, including Taylor.” Michael replies “Well that’s a rough spot to be in man, but don’t let it get you down. Those guys are meaningless now. You’re the one with the hot date. Don’t concern yourself with what any of them think, it’s not like you’re gonna be stuck with them the whole night anyways. As soon as you get to the dance, you’ll be home free.” Jimmy ponders it for a second and responds “Okay, that was the first thing I wanted to bring up to you, and I gotta say, you’ve made me feel a lot better about the whole riding up to Prom with the jocks and cheerleaders thing, this second thing is a bit more sensitive of a subject.” Michael replies “Sensitive ay? I think I know where this might be heading.” Jimmy interrupts “Well we’ve been dating for a few months now. And it’s prom, the night where pretty much everyone hooks up with each other. I don’t know if she’s expecting us to or not, I’m just really nervous about the whole thing and have no idea what I should do.” Michael replies with a warm tone “Listen Jimmy, Ariel is probably feeling the same anxiety you’re feeling right now about this whole thing, so you’re not alone. I say, talk to her about it, see where her head is at with it, and I can promise you, the anxiety you’re both feeling right now will vanish as soon as you do.” Jimmy replies “That’s good advice man. You always seem to have the good advice. I appreciate it Michael.” Michael and Jimmy exchange a friendly handshake and Michael replies “Not a problem bro, the only reason I know is cuz I’ve been there.” At this moment, Pierre walks up with a pad and pencil and says “Alright, write down your cell phone numbers. No one ever picks up their home numbers when I call them in, so now, I need the cell numbers.” Michael and Jimmy are hesitant but eventually give Pierre their numbers. Right before they leave, Pierre says “Ah ah ah, not so fast.” Pierre pulls out a phone and starts dialing the numbers. Michael begins to look uneasy as Pierre says into the phone “Denny’s you say? No, I’m sorry, I have the wrong number.” Pierre glares at Michael who takes the pad back and puts his correct phone number down.

Jimmy and Ariel are sitting at Jimmy’s house working on some homework when Jimmy breaks the silence with “So do I need to buy some condoms?” Ariel is at first shocked and then sends out a nervous laugh saying “what are you talking about?” Jimmy replies “Sorry for saying that so randomly, but I kinda feel like there’s been a big elephant in the room ever since we started planning for prom. I know it’s the hook up night of the year, and I guess I just didn’t know how you were feeling about it.” Ariel replies “Well how do you feel about it?” Jimmy replies “Well I really think in this case it comes down more to your feelings. “ Ariel pauses before replying “Well as crazy as it was how you brought it up, I’m glad you did. I’ve felt a lot of anxiety thinking about this, mostly because I haven’t slept with anyone before. I really care about you a lot Jimmy, I’m just not sure I want my first time to be rushed by some stupid cliché, I want it to be special. I hope you’re not disappointed.” Jimmy takes Ariel’s hand and says “I’m not disappointed at all Ariel, I would never want you to feel uncomfortable. I’ll level with you, it’ll be my first time too, so I don’t want it to feel rushed because of some stupid cliché either.” Ariel looks extremely surprised and says “Really, you’ve never been with another girl?” Jimmy replies in a sarcastic tone “Hard to believe, I know.” Ariel is still surprised and says “wow, that is hard to believe.”

Michael is sitting in Professor Harper’s class taking the final exam. Professor Harper announces that the time is now up and everyone must hand in their papers. He collects the papers and thanks the class for the term and wishes everyone the best of luck before dismissing them. Michael hangs around and approaches Professor Harper, who asks Michael “So how is Ms. Reed doing? I got a call from her parents about the accident and how she wouldn’t be able to take the final until next week. I told them between you and me, it won’t be necessary. She’s got about as solid of an A as possible, and there’s no doubt in my mind she would have performed well on the final.” Michael replies “She’s doing much better, that’s really great of you to give her a pass on the final like that Professor.” Professor Harper replies “Well she was one of the best students I’ve ever had, along with you Mr. Bailey. I’m glad to hear she’s doing well.” Michael replies “Well there’s always next year sir. I hear you’ll be teaching a more advanced engineering class next year. I think I might be ready for it, seeing as how it will be my senior year.” Professor Harper smiles and replies “You better bring your A-game Mr. Bailey, because this class you just completed is a piece of cake compared to the advanced course, but I think you’ll do just fine in it, and I look forward to having you in my class again next year.” Michael extends his hand to Professor Harper and says “Thanks for everything this year Professor.” Professor Harper shakes Michael’s hand and says “And thanks to you as well Mr. Bailey. Now get out of here before the Lifetime channel comes in and decides to turn this into a made-for-TV movie.” Michael and Professor share a hearty laugh before Michael exits the classroom.

Jimmy is waiting with Ariel’s mother as Ariel is just finishing up getting ready for the dance. She comes down the stairs and looks absolutely gorgeous. Her beautiful long blond hair is down for a change and she is wearing make-up for the first time. She also has replaced her glasses with contacts and has a stunning blue dress on. Jimmy is absolutely speechless as he mumbles “Ummm, oh boy, wow, just wow, Ariel, you look absolutely amazing.” Ariel begins to blush before saying “You’re just saying that cuz I’m your girlfriend and you have to.” Jimmy replies “Umm, not even in the slightest, seriously, I’m saying that because you look unbelievable, and I can’t believe you’re my girlfriend.” Jimmy grabs two dozen red roses that he picked up from Ariel and hands them to her and she replies by saying how beautiful they are. Jimmy then places her corsage on her wrist while Ariel pins the boutonnière on Jimmy’s tux. Ariel’s mother starts taking photos of the two just as the party bus pulls up. Taylor sticks his head up from the sunroof and yells “Come on dweebs, let’s get this party rolling.” Jimmy and Ariel see the bus outside and say goodbye to Ariel’s mother before leaving. As Jimmy and Ariel make their way towards the party bus, Taylor notices how amazing Ariel looks and his eyes grow wide with disbelief. He is in utter shock and slides back to his seat with a stupefied look on his face. As Jimmy and Ariel enter the limo, everyone inside becomes completely silent, in shock that Jimmy Cooper has such an attractive date. Jennifer breaks the silence by saying “you guys look absolutely amazing. Taylor, take a pic of me with Jimmy and Ariel.” Jennifer hands the camera over to Taylor who is still so absolutely baffled that he holds the camera up completely backwards, and when he takes the picture, the camera flashes brightly directly in his face and he is momentarily blinded while everyone else in the limo breaks out laughing at him.

Michael and Ashley are sitting at the hospital watching tv together. Michael says “One more night, and we’re taking you home tomorrow Ash. Then we’ve got the whole summer to spend together, I seem to remember us having a pretty good track record with past summers.” Ashley smiles and replies “Hmmm, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I spent all my summers with this really strange kid down in North Carolina. He was super skinny, and kinda dorky, and he totally had a huge crush on me.” Michael interrupts “I totally know what you mean, I spent all my summers with this girl who was a bit of a tomboy, and she had these big braces for the majority of the summers that were just humongously huge.” Ashley playfully punches Michael on the shoulder, saying “Hey, don’t make fun of my braces mister. I used to get called Brace Face at school cuz of those.” Ashley begins pouting to which Michael replies “Alright, I’m sorry Ash, or should I say, Brace Face.” Ashley playfully punches Michael again but this time he avoids it and gives her a big kiss on the forehead instead. Ashley asks “So isn’t Jimmy’s prom tonight?” Michael replies “It most certainly is. I was over at his place helping him get all suited up before I came here. He’s looking mighty sharp I might add.” Ashley laughs before saying “Well now that I know you helped him pick out his clothes, I’m really concerned for him.” Michael is lying on the bed with Ash when he gets a text from an unknown number. The text says “Hey, it’s Jimmy, I’m using someone else’s phone cause mine is broken, I need a ride home, something really bad happened at the dance, and I can’t discuss it right now. Just come out here and pick me up please, I owe you one.” Michael relays the text to Ashley who quickly says “that poor kid, go help him out Michael.” Michael gathers his things to leave and says “I have no idea what could have went wrong there, but if he says he needs me, I gotta be there for him, I’ll be back as soon as I can Ash.” Michael gives Ashley a quick kiss before leaving.

Jimmy and Ariel are having a great time together at the dance. Jimmy is dancing absolutely terribly for all the faster songs but Ariel is just laughing and having a great time with him. Jimmy and Ariel take a break and Ariel excuses herself to the rest room. At this moment, Jimmy spots Jennifer sitting all alone in the corner of the room. He goes up to her and asks “Hey Jen, everything ok?” Jennifer replies “Oh, hey Jimmy, umm, ya, everything is okay, I mean, about as okay as it is gonna be. Taylor is off in the gym with his other stupid football friends getting absolutely wasted, and I’m left here feeling like an idiot. I have no idea why I stay with him Jimmy. He really treats me like absolute garbage. He’s making me spend my senior prom all by myself. I just really can’t stand him anymore.” Jennifer starts crying on Jimmy’s shoulder as Jimmy tries to console her. Jimmy replies “Hey, it’s gonna be ok. You are absolutely amazing Jennifer, and if nothing else, take this moment as the one where you realize Jennifer Ward is too good for Taylor Rogers. You deserve a guy that is ten million times better than that kid. You’re out of his league. I promise you, there’s a guy out there who deserves you and will be able to treat you the way you deserve to be treated.” Jennifer is trying hard to stifle her tears as she asks “You really think so Jimmy?” Jimmy replies “I don’t think so, I know so.” At this moment, Michael walks in and finds Jimmy sitting with Jennifer. He quickly says to Jimmy “Where’s Ariel, did something happen to her?” Jimmy replies “Michael, no, nothing happened to her, what are you doing here man?” Michael replies “Dude, you texted me saying you needed me to be here. You said something bad happened and you needed me to come out here.” Jimmy replies “I think someone played a practical joke on you man, cuz I never texted you. I bet it was Pierre. I never wanted to give that guy our cell phone numbers in the first place.” Michael becomes instantly relieved and says “Geez man, I was worried sick. I’m gonna let Pierre have it next time I see him for pulling this. That guy is something else.” Ariel comes out of the bathroom just as a person up on stage announces that this will be the last dance and to make it a special one. Jimmy looks to Jennifer and asks “You feeling better Jen?” to which Jennifer replies “Definitely, you two go out and enjoy your last dance.” Jimmy nods and he and Ariel start slow dancing a few feet away from Jennifer and Michael. Michael looks at Jennifer and says “I know I’m a little bit too old for you, but I’ve never even been to my own prom, so what do you say to letting me relive the high school moments I never had and share this dance with me Jen?” Jennifer wipes away her tears and says “I accept that invitation gladly.” Michael and Jennifer begin slow dancing and Michael consoles her over her problems with Taylor. Michael tells her “The right guy is out there for you Jen, I totally believe that to be true.” Jennifer looks on at Jimmy and Ariel dancing and says “I think so too Michael, I think so too.”

Ashley is sitting in her room when she hears a knock at the door. Thinking it was Michael, she says “Oh wow, you weren’t gone very long...” before turning around and staring face to face with her stalker Jake. A look of shock comes over Ashley’s face before Jake replies “Oh on the contrary, I’ve been gone for quite some time. Is it really all that hard for a person to respond to a text nowadays? I mean, your boyfriend got that text from who he thought was his friend just now and was out the door to help him out in no time. Why no love for an old friend Ashley? Don’t tell me you’re not happy to see me.” Ashley stares on in shock as the scene fades to black.
